SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR OPTIMIZATION OF THE FERMENTATION PROCESS

The invention comprises one or more gas volume fraction measurement devices operatively connected to one or more controllers and one or more deaeration mechanisms which receive control signals from said one or more controllers and perform an act on the system, such as by controlling a level of deaeration chemistry into some portion of the fermentation system. In one embodiment, the deaeration mechanism is an antifoam feed pump which pumps antifoam chemistry into a feed line of the fermenter in response to the measured gas volume fraction in the fermenter's recirculation loop, in an amount determined by the controller to be effective to reduce foaming and lower column height in the fermenter.

An apparatus (40) for deaerating a froth comprising a spinning basket (44) mounted on a driven shaft (46). The side walls of the spinning basket have a mesh or openings therein. Froth is supplied to the interior of the spinning basket and contacts the floor of the spinning basket and is flung outwardly through the mesh or openings to break the bubbles and deaerate the froth. A solid all (42) may surround the spinning basket to further assist in deaeration. A spinning plate may be used in place of the spinning basket. In another embodiment, vacuum is used to deaerate the froth.

Pump separating gas from liquid

In-situ resource utilization-derived water purification and hydrogen and oxygen production

This disclosure provides an integrated system and method for producing purified water, hydrogen, and oxygen from contaminated water. The contaminated water may be derived from regolith-based resources on the moon, Mars, near-Earth asteroids, or other destination in outer space. The integrated system and method utilize a cold trap to receive the contaminated water in a vapor phase and selectively freeze out water from one or more volatiles. A heat source increases temperature in the cold trap to vaporize the frozen contaminated water to produce a gas stream of water vapor and volatiles. A chemical scrubber may remove one or more volatiles. The integrated system and method utilize ionomer membrane technology to separate the water vapor from remaining volatiles. The water vapor is delivered for crew use or delivered to an electrolyzer to produce hydrogen and oxygen.
