A system for detecting a combustion-related condition in a pulverizer includes a pulverizer configured to receive coal chunks via an inlet, to grind the coal chunks into coal powder and to output the coal powder via an outlet. The system includes sensors configured to detect heat input characteristics supplied to the pulverizer and heat output characteristics emitted from the pulverizer. The system also includes a controller configured to determine, based on signals from the sensors, whether a combustion-related condition exists in the pulverizer based on a heat balance function including the heat input characteristics and the heat output characteristics.

The front surface (30) is delimited in one direction by the grating disc surface, and in at least one other direction by at least one grating edge (32). Due to this improved grating disc less food particles remaining on the grating disci.e. less processed food being caught by the grating toothimplying improved cleanability of the grating disc after use.

This enables adjustment of operational variables such as material feed, water, grinding additives, air flow, temperature, and their combinations. The feeder receives a supply of the particulate material and directs that material to flow to the grinding zone of the vertical roller mill. The feeder can constrain the flow of material to a defined cross-section by applying a momentum to and/or pushing, or to compact the flow of material prior to directing the material, or combinations thereof.
