Systems and methods are provided for applying cold spray erosion protection to an airfoil. One embodiment is a method for applying an abrasion coating to a fiber-reinforced composite substrate. The method includes applying a bond layer to the fiber-reinforced composite substrate by emitting, with a supersonic nozzle of a High Pressure Cold Spray (HPCS) system, a first gas stream including a first metal powder at a first speed below supersonic speed. The method further includes applying a cold spray deposit layer to the bond layer by emitting, with the supersonic nozzle, a second gas stream including a second metal powder at a second speed above supersonic speed.

A method for forming a nanomaterial coating through solute-assisted assembly is provided. The method includes steps of: providing a mixture comprising a solvent, a solute, and a nanomaterial or particle; applying sonication to the mixture; and contacting a substrate with the mixture so as to form a coating of the nanomaterial or the particle onto the substrate. The solute is selected from a salt, a sugar, an acid, a base, or a combination thereof. The present disclosure also provides the resulting products comprising the nanomaterial coating for flexible electronics and functional textiles.

COLD SPRAYED ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS AND METHODS THEREOF

The present disclosure relates to a cold spray metal process for providing an electrical connection within a multilayered composite article. The present disclosure relates to a cold sprayed metal coated article or a structural component having a polymeric composite material having at least one surface, a thermoplastic electrochemical insulating layer on the at least one surface, an electrical circuit may include a cold sprayed metal coating present on at least a portion of a surface of the electrochemical insulating layer, and at least one additional layer, the at least one additional layer encapsulating at least a portion of the cold sprayed metal between the additional layer and the electrochemical insulating layer. The structural component may include a cold sprayed metal coating having one or more non-continuous segments, where the one or more non-continuous segments are not in lateral contact with one another.

AQUEOUS, LOW SOLIDS BASECOAT COMPOSITIONS

Disclosed herein is an aqueous, one-pack coating composition including a polymer, a crosslinking agent, a polymeric surface-active agent, and an organic rheology control agent. The total solids content of the coating composition is from 7.5-11.5 wt.-%; the viscosity at 23° C. is from 2000-12000 mPas at a shear rate of 0.1 s-1¬; the amount of the polymeric surface-active agent is from 0.5-25 wt.-% based on the total solids content of the coating composition; the amount of the organic rheology control agent is from 5-12 wt.-% based on the total solids content of the coating composition; and the coating composition does not contain platelet-shaped particulate material having a median particle size of 2 μm or more. Further disclosed herein are methods of producing a coating and applying the coating with a device producing a coating composition jet, and substrates coated by the methods.

METHODS FOR COATING SUBSTRATES

Coated substrates, methods of coating substrates, and coatings for substrates are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, a method for coating a substrate includes coating the substrate with a primer to form a primer layer, where the primer comprises a primer conductivity additive, a primer adhesion promotor additive, a primer binder, and primer volatiles. The primer layer is flash dried to reduce the primer volatiles to about 20 weight percent or less. The primer layer is coated with a total color coat layer prior to curing the primer layer, and then the total color coat layer and the primer layer are cured to form a cured substrate coating. The cured substrate coating has a substrate coating percent transmissivity of specified amounts or less at four different wavelength ranges, and the cured primer layer has a primer layer transmissivity less than that of the substrate coating percent transmissivity.
