METHODS FOR SAFE DISPOSAL OF MERCURY FROM MERCURY-CONTAMINATED WASTE
A method for treating and disposing of mercury—from mercury-contaminated waste—includes recovering high-purity mercury (e.g., greater than about 99.0 wt. % elemental Hg) from the mercury-contaminated waste. The high-purity mercury is converted to mercuric sulfide (HgS). The mercuric sulfide (HgS) is intermixed with a polymer-based material to form an encapsulated mercury material. The encapsulated mercury material is disposed within a sealed waste container. The sealed waste container is disposed of at a landfill site. Also disclosed is a mercury-including waste product that comprises pellets. The pellets comprise mercuric sulfide within a polymer material.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND HEAT EXTRACTION FROM WASTE LANDFILLS
The field of the invention relates to systems and methods for exchanging heat from the degradation, decomposition, and chemical/biochemical transformation of municipal, industrial, and other types of waste. In one embodiment, a heat extraction system may include a closed-loop fluid circulation piping channeled throughout at least one heat extraction well oriented throughout a waste mass. The piping is fluidly coupled to a heat exchanger. A first circulation fluid is circulated through the closed-loop circulation piping into various depths of the waste mass to transfer thermal energy between said mass and said heat exchanger. In one embodiment, the transfer of thermal energy between the waste mass and the heat exchanger is used as alternative energy method and to control at least one of shear strength, compressibility, and hydraulic conductivity of the waste mass.
Structure and method for three-dimensional restoration of slope soil in abandoned ion-absorbed rare earth mining area
A structure and method for three-dimensional restoration of slope soil in an abandoned ion-absorbed rare earth mining area, belonging to the field of ecological restoration technologies. The structure for three-dimensional restoration of slope soil in an abandoned ion-absorbed rare earth mining area provided by the present invention includes an ecological water-harvesting pond, ecological intercepting ditches, an improved soil layer laid on the surface of a to-be-restored slope region and a soil restoration ecological network disposed on the improved soil layer. The improved soil layer, the ecological water-harvesting pond and the ecological intercepting ditches are each provided with a combined plant synusia system. The restoration structure provided by the present invention can effectively improve an extremely degraded ecological environment of the abandoned ion-absorbed rare earth mining area caused by tailings waste land and restore the degraded or polluted mining area soil and environment caused by mine destruction during rare earth mining.
Portable gas monitor
A portable monitor used to measure landfill gas and landfill well parameters. The portable monitor includes a control unit and a measuring unit that can communicate wirelessly with one another. The control unit and/or measuring unit can include a heating arrangement to increase the temperature of one or more components in the control unit and/or measuring unit in cold environments.

DISPOSAL OF HIGH-LEVEL WASTE INTO DEEP SALT FORMATIONS
Systems, methods, processes, and/or steps for the long-term disposal of high-level nuclear and radioactive waste, along with other radioactive waste forms, is done within deep salt formation(s) of predetermined characteristics. Waste may be emplaced within a given deep salt formation and after emplacement, creep of that deep salt formation around the deposited waste may entirely entomb that emplaced waste safely for geologic time periods. To emplace the waste, wellbore(s) may be drilled from the Earth's terrestrial surface into the given deep salt formation and then either a mostly horizontal wellbore may be formed within the given deep salt formation and/or a human-made cavern may be formed down and within the given deep salt formation. After emplacement, creep of the deep salt formation will destroy the initial boundaries of the horizontal wellbore and/or of the human-made cavern. This creep sealing process may occur over relatively short time periods.

Coupler for landfill tarp weight system
A weight system for a landfill tarpaulin. A pair of parallel chains are retained within a pair of sleeves in the tarp. A plurality of parallel wire lines traverse the tarpaulin. A plurality of elongated coupler bodies are provided with each coupler body having a first end terminating in an eyelet, a second, opposed end terminating in a hollow recess, and an attached threaded protrusion to the underside of the body. A chain fastener passes through one eyelet, passes through one of the links of the chain, and passes through the sleeve of the tarp. A tarp fastener passes through a washer, passes through the tarp, passes through an optional washer, and is threadably connected to the elongated coupler body. Each end of the wire lines is received and held in place by the hollow recess.
