Provided is a carbon layer derived from carbide ceramics, wherein metal or non-metal atoms are extracted selectively from the surface of carbide ceramics to form voids, which, in turn, are filled with carbon synthesized by a carbon compound, thereby providing improved roughness and hardness, as well as to a method for preparing the same.

Stress relief of mechanically roughened cylinder bores for reduced cracking tendency

A method of treating the surface of an aluminum-based engine block cylinder bore that has been mechanically roughened. In one form, this method includes using vibratory stress relief, elevated temperature stress relief or cryogenic stress relief so that residual stresses imparted to the surface by the roughening process are reduced. In this way, a protective coating that is also applied to the bore surface will exhibit better adhesion and lower incidence of stress-induced or fatigue-induced cracking.

Metal powder

The invention provides for a cermet powder containing 75-90% by weight of at least one hard material powder, from 10 to 25% by weight of one or more matrix metal powders and up to 3% by weight of at least one modifier,
wherein the matrix metal powder or powders contain from 0 to 38% by weight of cobalt, from 0 to 38% by weight of nickel, from 0 to 20% by weight of aluminum, from 0 to 90% by weight of iron and from 10 to 35% by weight of chromium and
the sum of the contents of iron and chromium is in the range from 10 to 95% by weight and the sum of the contents of cobalt, nickel and iron is in the range from 65 to 95% by weight. The invention also relates to a cermet and a process to make the cermet containing the cermet powder and shaped article coated with the cermet powder and a process to make the shaped article.

Large-capacity spindle assemblies and collets for use in davenport multi-spindle screw machines

An improved spindle assembly for a Davenport multi-axis screw machine is adapted to adequately hold one-inch round bar-stock in a collet against movement relative thereto attributable to machining operations performed on a cantilevered length of bar-stock held in and extending beyond the collet. The spindle assembly may permit the use of the screw machine on materials thought heretofore to be too difficult to machine on a screw machine. Cam surfaces on the inner spindle and collet may be coated with a low-friction material. A stress-relieving connection between the inner spindle and collet is provided.

Displacement and position measurement in machine tool

A machine tool includes a displacement measuring unit to measure the displacement of a workpiece center-to-blade tip distance which is the distance between a center equivalent position of a workpiece support surface of a workpiece support unit and a blade tip equivalent position of a tool support unit in a direction perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to a spindle axis. The displacement measuring unit measures the displacement by measuring the displacement of a continuous path between the center equivalent position of the workpiece support unit and the blade tip equivalent position and excluding a processing movement region. The displacement measuring unit includes workpiece side and tool side linear position detecting units. A measured value of the displacement measuring unit is used in correcting an X-axis command value.

Synthesis and transfer of metal dichalcogenide layers on diverse surfaces

Aromatic molecules are seeded on a surface of a growth substrate; and a layer (e.g., a monolayer) of a metal dichalcogenide is grown via chemical vapor deposition on the growth substrate surface seeded with aromatic molecules. The seeded aromatic molecules are contacted with a solvent that releases the metal dichalcogenide layer from the growth substrate. The metal dichalcogenide layer can be released with an adhered transfer medium and can be deposited on a target substrate.

Apparatus for feeding bars to a machine tool
09616501 · 2017-04-11 · ·

An apparatus for feeding bars to a machine tool including an end adjacent a working zone in which a spindle is provided; a drum element, rotatable around an axis; a movable support provided on the drum element for supporting and guiding a bar parallel to the axis. The movable support slidably drivable on the drum element parallel to the axis between a disengagement retracted configuration and an engagement extended configuration. The movable support having telescopic tube configured for being received inside tubular housing and guide for coupling with the spindle. The telescopic tube defines, a cylindrical containing structure configured for enclosing and supporting in a distributed manner a respective bar along the entire supporting zone, so as to prevent the bar from flexing because of the centrifugal actions generated by rotation.
