DEVICE TO MEASURE AN EMBRYO'S HEART IN AN EGG
Disclosed is a device for contactless measuring of an embryo's heart rate in an egg whereby infrared light is sent in the egg by one light source, and the reflection of that light is detected by one or more light sensors and converted into a signal representative for the heart rate, whereby a shield is provided to avoid light that is reflected on the egg shell interfering with the light sensors. The shield is provided at the light source and not at the light sensors, whereby a light tube is provided between the light source and the egg and the light tube is internally dimensioned and positioned such that a focused light spot is directed on the egg, and the light tube is dimensioned and positioned such that light reflected on the surface of the egg on the level of the light spot cannot directly reach the light sensors.
Egg lifting device, and associated systems and methods
An egg lifting device is provided. Such a device includes a body and a securing arrangement extending from the body. The securing arrangement is configured to engage and deflect about an egg such that the egg is seated within the securing arrangement for lifting thereof. A plurality of egg lifting devices is arranged on an egg removal system such that multiple eggs are capable of being removed from an egg flat. Associated systems and methods are also provided.

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE IN OVO DETERMINATION OF FOWL GENDER
The present invention relates to a method for non-destructively identifying a characteristic of a Gallus Gallus domesticus embryo in ovo, the method comprising: (a) obtaining a sample of material associated with an egg comprising the embryo, and (b) measuring a score value for the presence of, and concentration of at least a first biomarker in the sample indicative of the characteristic of the embryo, and (c) applying a threshold to the score value and concentration obtained in (b) to identify the characteristic for the embryo associated with the presence and concentration of the biomarker, wherein an at least first biomarker comprises an amino compound having a molecular weight in the range of from 140 to 190 g/mole, wherein step (c) further comprises: (i) correlating each relevant biomarker signal with a reference biomarker by matching the spectrum of each correlating signal with the expected spectrum of the correlating reference biomarker using a similarity measure, to define at least one positively correlating signal; (ii) measuring the intensity of each positively correlating signal and scoring its absolute and/or relative signal intensity; and (iii) applying a threshold to the score value obtained from a similarity function to determine the correlated embryo characteristic.

Apparatus for selectively processing eggs, and associated method
An egg processing apparatus is provided. Such an apparatus includes a processing head and processing devices associated therewith. Each processing device has an end configured to interact with an avian egg. Each processing device is capable of being selectively held in a non-contact or contact position with respect to an avian egg during a processing sequence such that a first subset of the processing devices is in the non-contact position while simultaneously having a second subset of the processing devices in the contact position. An associated method is also provided.

Light controlling assembly for an egg identification system, and associated method
An egg identification system for determining viability of an avian egg is provided. Such a system includes an emitter assembly configured to emit electromagnetic radiation having a predetermined wavelength toward an egg. A detector assembly is spaced-apart from the emitter assembly and configured to detect electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the egg. A light controlling assembly is positioned proximate to the emitter assembly. The light controlling assembly includes an absorbing layer configured to absorb electromagnetic radiation at the predetermined wavelength. The absorbing layer defines an opening through which electromagnetic radiation emitted from the emitter assembly is capable of passing therethrough toward the egg. A processor is configured to process an output signal of the detector assembly to determine viability of the egg. An associated method is also provided.
