A method of additive manufacture is disclosed. The method may include restricting, by an enclosure, an exchange of gaseous matter between an interior of the enclosure and an exterior of the enclosure. The method may further include running multiple machines within the enclosure. Each of the machines may execute its own process of additive manufacture. While the machines are running, a gas management system may maintain gaseous oxygen within the enclosure at or below a limiting oxygen concentration for the interior.

Chamber systems for additive manufacturing

A method of additive manufacture is disclosed. The method may include creating, by a 3D printer contained within an enclosure, a part having a weight greater than or equal to 2,000 kilograms. A gas management system may maintain gaseous oxygen within the enclosure atmospheric level. In some embodiments, a wheeled vehicle may transport the part from inside the enclosure, through an airlock, as the airlock operates to buffer between a gaseous environment within the enclosure and a gaseous environment outside the enclosure, and to a location exterior to both the enclosure and the airlock.

A method of making a sheath for an airfoil may include the steps of forming an upper sleeve and a lower sleeve, and forming a central portion bonded to the upper sleeve and the lower sleeve. The central portion may be formed by depositing a material on the upper sleeve and the lower sleeve. A portion of the material may be removed from at least one of the central portion, the upper sleeve, or the lower sleeve. The sheath may include a first flank, a central portion bonded to the first flank, and a second flank bonded to the central portion. The central portion may have a substantially uniform microstructure resulting from additive manufacturing.

A component includes an additively manufactured component with an internal passage and an additively manufactured elongated member within the internal passage. A method of additively manufacturing a component including additively manufacturing a component with an internal passage; and additively manufacturing an elongated member within the internal passage concurrent with additively manufacturing the component.

Gas phase alloying for wire fed joining and deposition processes

Gas is introduced into molten metal during an additive metal fabrication process and/or during a metal fusion process. The gas may comprise a process gas that flows through a tubular feed wire. The amount of process gas introduced can be controlled to vary the composition and/or material properties of metal deposits formed from a molten metal. Material properties such as yield strength, hardness, and fracture toughness can be increased or decreased in specific regions to provide material property gradients that closely correspond to expected requirements of components fabricated utilizing additive and/or fusion processes.

Method for making ceramic matrix composite articles with progressive melt infiltration

A method of melt infiltrating a green ceramic matrix composite (CMC) article, wherein the green CMC article includes a ceramic reinforcing structure. The method includes heating a localized region of the green CMC article; melting a metal alloy infiltrant to form a molten metal alloy; and introducing the molten metal alloy into the localized region to infiltrate the reinforcing structure of the green CMC article with the metal alloy infiltrant and form the CMC article.

Manufacturing metallic components having integrated crack stoppers

This relates to a method of manufacturing a metallic component by additive layer manufacturing. The method comprises the step of providing a layer of granular metallic material. The layer of the granular metallic material is melted by a laser beam or electron beam which applies a defined scanning strategy, which is defined in such a way that a first region of the layer is melted before a second region of the layer such that during the subsequent solidification, residual stresses emerge in the first and the second region. These residual stresses act as integrated crack stoppers of the metallic component.

Near-net shape shield and fabrication processes

A process of fabricating a shield, a process of preparing a component, and an erosion shield are disclosed. The process of fabricating the shield includes forming a near-net shape shield. The near-net shape shield includes a nickel-based layer and an erosion-resistant alloy layer. The nickel-based layer is configured to facilitate secure attachment of the near-net shaped to a component. The process of preparing the component includes securing a near-net shape shield to a substrate of a component.
