Shaped vitrified abrasive agglomerate with shaped abrasive particles, abrasive articles, and related methods

A shaped abrasive agglomerate particle includes a shaped abrasive particle bonded in a vitreous matrix. The shaped abrasive particles have a longest particle lineal dimension on a surface and a shortest particle dimension perpendicular to the longest particle lineal dimension, and the longest particle lineal dimension is at least twice the shortest particle dimension. The shaped abrasive agglomerate particle has a longest agglomerate lineal dimension on a surface and a shortest agglomerate dimension perpendicular to the longest agglomerate lineal dimension, and the longest agglomerate lineal dimension is at least twice the shortest agglomerate dimension. The abrasive agglomerate particles are useful in abrasive articles. Methods of making the shaped abrasive agglomerate particle and abrading a workpiece are also described.

Abrasive article and method of forming

An abrasive article can include an abrasive component including a body. The body can include a bond matrix and abrasive particles contained in the bond matrix. In an embodiment, the body can include an interconnected phase extending through at least a portion of the bond matrix. The body can include a discontinuous phase including a plurality of discrete members. At least one of the discrete member can include a macroscopic pore. In another embodiment, the body can include a porosity of at least 15 vol % for a total volume of the body.

Coated abrasive article and method of making the same

A method of making a coated abrasive article is disclosed. A backing has first and second opposed major surfaces. A make layer precursor is disposed on at least a portion of the first major surface. Magnetizable abrasive particles are disposed onto the make layer precursor while under the influence of an applied magnetic field. At least a majority the magnetizable abrasive particles extend away from the make layer precursor in an orientation substantially aligned with the applied magnetic field. Non-magnetizable particles are then disposed onto the make layer precursor while under the influence of the applied magnetic field. At least some of the non-magnetizable particles are disposed between the magnetizable abrasive particles. Then, the make layer precursor is at least partially cured to provide a make layer.

Fixed abrasive articles and methods of forming same

A fixed abrasive article having a body including abrasive particles contained within a bond material, the abrasive particles including shaped abrasive particles or elongated abrasive particles having an aspect ratio of length:width of at least 1.1:1, each of the shaped abrasive particles or elongated abrasive particles having a predetermined position or a predetermined three-axis orientation.

Embodiments described herein relate to integrated abrasive (IA) polishing pads, and methods of manufacturing IA polishing pads using, at least in part, surface functionalized abrasive particles in an additive manufacturing process, such as a 3D inkjet printing process. In one embodiment, a method of forming a polishing article includes dispensing a first plurality of droplets of a first precursor, curing the first plurality of droplets to form a first layer comprising a portion of a sub-polishing element, dispensing a second plurality of droplets of the first precursor and a second precursor onto the first layer, and curing the second plurality of droplets to form a second layer comprising portions of the sub-polishing element and portions of a plurality of polishing elements. Here, the second precursor includes functionalized abrasive particles having a polymerizable group chemically bonded to surfaces thereof.

Methods of making metal bond abrasive articles via powder bed jetting are disclosed. Metal bond abrasive articles prepared by the method include abrasive articles having arcuate or tortuous cooling channels, abrasive segments, abrasive wheels, and rotary dental tools.

A first region of the perimeter includes the second edge and extends inwardly and terminates at two corners defining first and second acute interior angles. The perimeter has at most four corners that define acute interior angles. A second surface is disposed opposite, and not contacting, the first surface. A peripheral surface is disposed between and connects the first and second surfaces. The peripheral surface has a first predetermined shape. Methods of making the shaped ceramic abrasive particles, and abrasive articles including them are also disclosed.

Correction of fabricated shapes in additive manufacturing

A method of fabricating an object using an additive manufacturing system includes receiving data indicative of a desired shape of the object to be fabricated by droplet ejection. The desired shape defines a profile including a top surface and one or more recesses. Data indicative of a pattern of dispensing feed material is generated to at least partially compensate for distortions of the profile caused by the additive manufacturing system, and a plurality of layers of the feed material are dispensed by droplet ejection in accordance to the pattern.
