Hydrogels for 3D printing having high resolution

In one aspect, build materials for use with a three-dimensional (3D) printing system are described herein. In some embodiments, a build material described herein comprises an acrylate component, a photoinitiator component, a non-curable absorber component, and water. The photoinitiator component of the build material is operable to initiate curing of the acrylate component and/or other curable materials that may optionally be present when the photoinitiator is exposed to incident curing radiation having a Gaussian distribution of wavelengths and a peak wavelength . The build material has a penetration depth (D.sub.p) and a critical energy (E.sub.c) at the wavelength . In some embodiments, the D.sub.p is greater than 200 m and less than 300 m, and the E.sub.c is 3-12 mJ/cm.sup.2. In other embodiments, the D.sub.p is greater than 10 m and less than 50 m, and the E.sub.c is 5-40 mJ/cm.sup.2.

Provided are devices and methods that combine material anisotropy with nonlinear structural design to produce structures that precisely and sequentially actuate in response to multiple stimuli, such as water or non-polar solvents. These devices and methods can include bistable anisotropic elements that convert to monostable element upon exposure to a particular stimulus, and anisotropic distortions can be harnessed to change the geometric properties of the element to cross phase boundaries and trigger shape changes at precise times. One can incorporate complex logic into these devices and methods.

A polymerization initiator molecule, excitable by two photons and capable of generating polymerization-initiating free radicals, includes two branches grafted onto a central phenyl nucleus. Each branch includes an oligomer of oligophenyleneethynylenyl type or oligo-2,5-dihalogenphenyleneethynylenyl type. A photopolymerizable composition, activatable by two-photon absorption, includes a radically polymerizable resin and a photochemically effective amount of a radical photoinitiator system. The photoinitiator system includes at least one initiator molecule as described above. Moreover, a method and an associated device for two-photon three-dimensional printing are disclosed. The method includes transforming a volume of a photopolymerizable composition including at least one initiator molecule. The transformation includes irradiating the volume of composition with an irradiation light source emitting an irradiation signal having a wavelength L.sub.irr of between 1 and 1.5 times, and preferably between 1.1 and 1.25 times, a cut-off wavelength L.sub.CutOff of the initiator molecule. Embodiments may apply to submicron-resolution two-photon 3D printing.

Curable compositions

Provided herein are curable compositions useful for, among other things, making three-dimensional parts by additive manufacturing. The compositions when cured exhibit a surprising balance of improved tensile strength and percent elongation.
