High viscosity base fluids based on oil compatible polyesters prepared from long-chain epoxides

A polyester is useful as a high viscosity base fluid. A method for its preparation involves epoxidizing an alpha-olefin, reacting the alpha-epoxide or diol with a saturated linear aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and isolating the polyester. Lubricant compositions can contain such polyesters and the compositions are useful as automatic transmission fluids, manual transmission fluids, continuously variable transmission fluids, gear oil formulations, industrial gear oil formulations, axle fluid formulations, dual clutch transmission fluids, dedicated hybrid transmission fluids, or as hydraulic oils.

The present invention provides liquid crystal (LC)-infused materials and methods for detecting compounds or impurities in liquid samples using such materials. These slippery materials comprise a lubricating liquid, preferably a thermotropic liquid crystal, and a solid substrate able to immobilize or host the lubricating liquid. The portion of the substrate coated by the lubricating fluid forms a slippery surface able to allow droplets of various materials to slide off the slippery surface in a manner dependent on the chemical composition of the droplet, which can be used to detect the presence of analytes, impurities and other molecules within the droplet.

The lubricating oil composition has a kinematic viscosity of 100 C. of 9.3 mm.sup.2/s or less, a viscosity index of 280 or more, and a content Y (% by mass) of the oxygen-containing synthetic oil based on the total amount of the lubricating oil composition satisfying the following expression (1): Y<3.7 ln(X)+ (1), where =0.5, =19, and X represents a ratio of the number of carbon atoms and the number of oxygen atoms per one molecule of the oxygen-containing synthetic oil.

A solid lubricating coating film capable of imparting favorable lubricity and corrosion resistance to a connection for oil country tubular goods. Two or more solid lubricants are dispersed in a binder resin. Graphite is contained in an amount of 50% or more and 90% or less of a total weight of the solid lubricants, and the graphite has a scaly shape and an average particle diameter of 10.0 m or less. A solid lubricant made of one or more materials selected from BN, mica, talc, MCA, MoS.sub.2, PTFE, PFA, and FEP is further contained as other solid lubricants of the two or more types of solid lubricants. The binder resin contains a PEEK resin having an average particle diameter of 20 m or less as a main component, and the PEEK resin is contained in an amount of 70% or more of a total weight of the binder resin.

A process for preparing the water-based lubricating grease composition may include blending a suitable amount of water with a salt-based thickener to provide a thickened water-based grease, wherein the salt-based thickener is obtained from contacting a base with a fat; and adding a polymer-based thickener to the thickened water-based grease.

Environmentally stable solid lubricant coating

The invention is directed to environmentally stable solid lubricant coatings with bilayer transition-metal dichalcogenide structures that are designed to resist the effects of oxidation during long term storage, or during short exposures under conditions that would oxidize similar films that do not have these bilayer structures. In addition to improving oxidation resistance, these bilayer structures also facilitate the more rapid establishment of a low, steady-state friction coefficient than is possible with similar films that do not have these bilayer structures.
