Method and apparatus for die coating a substrate with high viscosity materials
A method is disclosed for die coating a moving substrate with a high viscosity material such as a polymer. The method includes heating and mixing ingredients to form a homogenous mixture, pumping the mixture around a circulation loop with a first pump, maintaining a predetermined pressure of the mixture within the circulation loop, drawing mixture from the circulation loop with a second pump, delivering the mixture using the second pump to an extrusion die adjacent the moving substrate to coat the substrate, and controlling the second pump as a function of at least the speed of the moving substrate to maintain predetermined characteristics of the coating mixture applied to the moving substrate. An apparatus for carrying out the method also is disclosed.
METHOD OF FORMING PRESSURE PAD OR OTHER FLEXIBLE ELEMENT FOR USE DURING CURE OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS
A method of manufacturing a flexible element configured for pressing against composite material received on a mold surface of a mold during cure, including placing a porous material over the mold surface, forming a sealed enclosure containing the mold surface and the porous material, infusing a curable liquid material such as silicone in liquid form into the enclosure under vacuum and through the porous material, curing the liquid material to form the flexible element, and opening the enclosure and disengaging the flexible element from the mold. In a particular embodiment, the flexible element is a pressure pad.
TOPSHEETS INTEGRATED WITH HETEROGENOUS MASS LAYER
An absorbent article and method of making the absorbent article are disclosed. The absorbent article having a topsheet, a backsheet, and an absorbent core structure having one or more layers wherein at least one layer is a heterogeneous mass layer, wherein the topsheet and the heterogeneous mass are integrated such that they reside in the same X-Y plane.
Processes for recycling carpet and products of such processes
Methods for the recycling of carpet are disclosed that produce clean face fiber suitable for industrial use. The methods allow the recovery of face fiber material, for example a polyester or a polyamide, from carpets that includes a face fiber material and a backing material, and include the steps of heating the carpet to a temperature lower than the melting point of the face fiber material, but higher than the initial thermal decomposition temperature of the backing material, for a time and at a temperature sufficient to thermally decompose, pyrolyze, or oxidize at least a portion of the backing material, rendering the backing material friable, that is more friable than the untreated backing; and applying mechanical force to the carpet so as to liberate the friable backing material from the face fiber material.
STITCHED POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES USING BARRIER LAYERS FOR CRYOGENIC APPLICATIONS AND METHODS OF MAKING THE SAME
Provided herein are polymer matrix composites, articles including the polymer matrix composites, and methods of forming the polymer matrix composites. The polymer matrix composite includes a stitched composite and a hybrid barrier layer incorporated within the stitched composite, the hybrid barrier layer including a thin ply and a nanographene dispersed resin. The article includes a high-pressure composite cryogenic tank including the polymer matrix composite. The method includes positioning a dry thin ply between composite plies, stitching the composite plies to form a stitched preform, dispersing nanographene into the resin, and infusing the stitched preform with the modified resin.
LOW WEIGHT MODULAR CARPET COMPONENTS AND METHODS OF MAKING THE SAME
A low-weight carpet tile and process for making the same, wherein the carpet tile comprises a facecloth having a plurality of face yarns tufted through a primary backing, an extruded polymer secondary backing layer, and a reinforcing scrim layer partially un embedded within the extruded polymer secondary backing layer. The top surface and bottom surface of the carpet tile are defined by the facecloth and the reinforcing scrim layer, respectively. A polymer-based resin is extruded onto the facecloth to form an at least substantially uniform secondary backing layer, and the reinforcing scrim layer is laid onto the extruded polymer secondary backing layer while the extruded polymer secondary backing layer remains above a softening temperature for the resin. The entire multi-layer web is then passed through a nip to embed the reinforcing scrim layer into the extruded polymer secondary layer, and the entire web is chilled.
