The airflow regulation system also includes an actuator employing a phase-change element configured to selectively store and release energy in response to changes in temperature and stress. The actuator is arranged at the heat-absorbing subassembly and configured to select a position for the valve between and inclusive of fully-opened and fully-closed in response to a temperature of the heat-absorbing subassembly. The airflow regulation system can be arranged on a vehicle having a vehicle body including a first body end configured to face the incident ambient airflow.

ACTIVE AIRFLOW DEFLECTOR FOR BRAKE COOLING

A vehicle includes a vehicle body with a first body end configured to face an incident ambient airflow and an underbody section. The vehicle also includes a brake subassembly arranged proximate the underbody section and configured to decelerate the vehicle. An airflow regulation system includes a deflector moveably mounted to the underbody section and configured to regulate an underbody portion of the incident airflow to the brake subassembly. The system also includes a mechanism configured to change a position of the deflector to selectively direct the underbody portion of the incident ambient airflow to the brake subassembly and enhance aerodynamics of the vehicle body. The system additionally includes a first sensor configured to detect a predetermined operating condition of the brake subassembly. Furthermore, the system includes a controller configured to regulate the mechanism for selecting the deflector's position in response to the detected predetermined operating condition of the brake subassembly.

Vehicle Fairing with Brake Cooling System

The primary purpose of this device is to reduce the fuel consumption of heavy trucks by improving airflow along the underside of a trailer, by way of a fairing mounted forward of the axles. This fairing is a teardrop shaped wedge with a flat bottom surface, which directs air towards the sides of the vehicle, while allowing a smaller volume to flow beneath the fairing such that it will clear the axles. Each axle is also covered by a flat panel, such that air will continue to travel smoothly beneath them. Attached to each panel is a brake cooling system, which consists of a pair of panels protruding downward, with their surfaces parallel to the direction of airflow. When the brakes are engaged, these panels rotate towards the center in an angled configuration, which redirects air towards the drums during and after braking, cooling them quickly and efficiently.
