The disclosure relates to a steering control device and method. Specifically, according to the disclosure, a steering control device comprises a first steering control module controlling a first reaction force motor to generate a reaction force torque for a steering wheel through a first inverter and a second steering control module controlling a second reaction force motor to generate a reaction force torque for the steering wheel through a second inverter. The first steering control module or the second steering control module generates the reaction force torque by conducting one of the first inverter and the second inverter when the first inverter and the second inverter fail.

Handwheel actuator assembly

A handwheel actuator assembly 600 for a steer by wire steering system of a vehicle is disclosed. The assembly 600 comprises a steering wheel 601 and a feedback torque generator. The steering wheel 601 has at least one hand grip portion rotatable around an axis of rotation of the steering wheel 601 which can be gripped by a driver and a hub 602 that supports the hand grip portion. The feedback torque generator comprises an electric motor which has a stator 609 and a rotor 610. The rotor 610 is directly or indirectly fixed to and rotates with the hub of the steering wheel 601 and the stator 609 is secured to a fixed part of the vehicle body such that it cannot rotate relative to the vehicle body. The motor comprises a brushless permanent magnet Vernier motor.

STEERING CONTROL DEVICE

A steering control device controls, as a target, a steering device including a steering actuator and a turning actuator that has a structure with a power transmission path cut off from the steering actuator, and can reflect a state of an automated driving command. A control unit is configured to execute: turning-side synchronization control when the absolute value of a deviation amount is a value within a first range; steering-side synchronization control when the absolute value of the deviation mount is a value within a second range that is a larger value than a value within the first range; and at least one of the turning-side synchronization control and the steering-side synchronization control when the absolute value of the deviation amount is a value within a third range that is a value between a value within the first range and a value within the second range.

The method further comprises adapting the steering feel using the scaling factors.

The control module is communicatively connected to the torque feedback unit. The control module is configured to identify a communication, gather information about user securement of the steering wheel, and operate the torque feedback unit to apply a supplementary torque to the steering wheel for haptically issuing the communication through the steering wheel. The supplementary torque has a magnitude that is scaled based on the information about user securement of the steering wheel.
