Trolling motor and foot pedal for trolling motor

A trolling motor has a steering motor transmitting torque to a steering shaft, which is coupled to a lower propulsion unit such that rotation of the steering shaft rotates the propulsion unit about a steering axis. A controller is in signal communication with the steering motor. A foot pedal in signal communication with the controller has a foot pad pivotable about a pivot axis and sends electrical steering signals to the controller (and thus steering motor) in response to pivoting of the foot pad. A variable resistance device is coupled to the foot pedal and controllable to vary resistance to pivoting of the foot pad about the pivot axis based on a position, velocity, acceleration, and/or jerk of the steering shaft. Additionally or alternatively, the variable resistance device provides haptic feedback to a user via the foot pad to inform the user about information related to the trolling motor system.

Methods and systems for controlling trim position of a marine drive

A method of automatically controlling trim position of a marine drive with a control system on a marine vessel includes receiving a user-selected command associated with wake surfing and then controlling a trim actuator to automatically position the marine drive in a tucked position, tucked position is between a vertical trim position and a minimum running trim position. Once a vessel condition of the marine vessel reaches a first threshold vessel condition the trim actuator is controlled to trim up the marine drive to a predetermined target trim position to generate wave behind the marine vessel. The first threshold vessel condition is at least one of a threshold vessel speed, a threshold engine speed, a threshold engine load, and a threshold vessel pitch.

An alternating current (AC) propulsion system for a boat. The AC propulsion system includes a trolling motor operably mountable to the boat and an AC power system. The trolling motor has a head and a motor housing secured at upper and lower ends, respectively, to an elongated shaft. An AC motor is disposed in the motor housing and drives a propeller. The AC power system includes a generator and a variable frequency drive (VFD). The VFD includes a VFD AC input and a VFD AC output. The VFD AC input is electrically coupled to an AC output of the generator. The VFD AC output is operably electrically coupled to the AC motor of the trolling motor. In some embodiments a second trolling motor with an AC motor may be electrically coupled to a second VFD AC output of the VFD.
