Lighter-than-air (LTA) Vehicle Health and Lifetime Estimation
20220207929 · 2022-06-30 · ·

The technology relates to health and lifetime estimation for a lighter-than-air vehicle. A method for vehicle health and lifetime estimation may include receiving flight data inputs associated with a vehicle, determining a gas temperature based on the flight data inputs, estimating a gas amount remaining in a balloon envelope of the vehicle, estimating a gas leak rate based on the gas amount, and determining a remaining lifetime output based on the gas leak rate, the remaining lifetime output indicating a remaining lifetime estimate for the vehicle. The method also may include simulating a terminal event and causing the vehicle to take an action based on the remaining lifetime estimate.

LAUNCH SYSTEM FOR LIGHTER-THAN-AIR-BALLOONS

An example method for launching a high-altitude balloon includes securing a launch collar around a balloon envelope to form a choke point separating an upper portion of the balloon envelope from a lower portion of the balloon envelope. The balloon envelope is structurally secured to a launch platform via a tether that is coupled to the launch collar. The launch collar is configured such that release of the launch collar from the choke point releases the balloon envelope from the launch platform.

VEHICLE WITH TRAVELING WAVE THRUST MODULE APPARATUSES, METHODS AND SYSTEMS

The VEHICLE WITH TRAVELING WAVE THRUST MODULE APPARATUSES, METHODS AND SYSTEMS include force or forces applied to an arc-like flexible sheet-like material to create a deformed crenated strip fin with strained-deformations. The strained-deformations take on a sinusoid-like form that express the internal energy state of the flexible sheet-like material after it has been configured into a crenated strip fin. After being incorporated into a mechanism with couplings that prevent the crenated strip fin from returning to its un-strained state, the strained-deformations persist. Actuators may be used to sequentially rotate vertebrae attached to the fins causing the travel of sinusoid-like deformations along the fins. The fin, fin actuator or actuators, power source and central controller may be incorporated into a thrust module. Two thrust modules coupled to a central body via roll actuators and flexible coupling members may form a vehicle with exceptional maneuverability.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DELIVERING HYDROGEN
20230272883 · 2023-08-31 · ·

A system and method for transporting and distributing hydrogen, reducing the risk of hydrogen leakage, maintaining a record of provenance, and measuring and recording its purity level as it flows from source to destination to assure it complies with a predetermined range of values. The system includes a hydrogen delivery line made from metallic or non-metallic pipe that may be placed inside a safety pipe such that a channel is formed between an exterior of the hydrogen delivery line and an interior of the safety pipe. A sweeper gas or liquid may be injected into the channel to purge any hydrogen that might escape from the hydrogen delivery line, and one or more sensors may be used to detect and avoid the presence of an unacceptable level of hydrogen, or to stop the flow of hydrogen and remediate the problem well before a safety or environmental risk can occur.
