APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR FLUID MANIPULATION
20230167838 · 2023-06-01 ·

An intentional fluid manipulation apparatus (IFMA) assembly with a first thrust apparatus that imparts a first induced velocity to a local free stream flow during a nominal operation requirement. The first thrust apparatus creates a streamtube. A second thrust apparatus is located in a downstream portion of the streamtube. The second thrust apparatus imparts a second induced velocity to the local free stream flow. The second induced velocity at the location of the second thrust apparatus has a component in a direction opposite to the direction of the first induced velocity at the location of the second thrust apparatus.

AERODYNAMIC CONTROL SURFACE
20230166831 · 2023-06-01 ·

An aerodynamic control surface assembly includes a structure (2) with an aerodynamic surface (8) and a curved aerodynamic control surface (20) configured to move between an extended (24) and a retracted position (22). The aerodynamic control surface is arranged to deploy through an aperture (18) in the aerodynamic surface and into an oncoming airflow (A). An actuation mechanism (52, 152, 252) coupled to the aerodynamic control surface (20) moves the aerodynamic control surface (20) between extended and retracted positions. The actuation mechanism (52, 152, 252) is configured such that the control surface (20) follows a curved kinematic path (40, 140, 240) as the control surface moves between the extended (24) and retracted positions (22). The actuation mechanism (52, 152, 252) remains fully behind the aerodynamic surface (8) throughout the movement of the aerodynamic control surface (20) between the extended (24) and retracted positions (22).

A composite panel assembly and method of forming the same includes a core, an inner skin coupled to a first side of the core, and an outer skin coupled to a second side of the core. A peripheral edge including portions of the core, the inner skin, and the outer skin, is compressed to close a path into the core.

Aircraft fuselage configurations for upward deflection of AFT fuselage

A fixed-wing cargo aircraft having a kinked fuselage is disclosed. The fuselage contains a continuous interior cargo bay, and includes a forward portion, an aft portion, and a kinked portion forming a junction in the fuselage between the forward and aft portions. The kinked portion contains a transition region of the cargo bay and defines a bend between a forward centerline and an aft centerline. The kinked portion is formed with a forward transverse frame section, a separate aft transverse frame section, and a plurality of longitudinal frame elements extending between the forward and aft frame sections, the forward frame being coupled to an aft end of the forward portion and the aft frame section being coupled to a forward end of the aft portion such that the aft frame section is angled with respect to the forward frame section about a lateral axis of the cargo aircraft.

Variable linkage for tie-rods

Apparatus, systems, and methods that include a variable length linkage for connecting together tie rods. The linkage includes first, second, and third apertures. There is a first distance between the first aperture and the second aperture and a second distance between the first aperture and the third aperture. The apparatus may include a fourth aperture having a third distance between the first aperture and the fourth aperture. The second, third, and fourth apertures may each have a non-circular cross-section. The linkage may include a base, a first finger, a second finger, and a third finger that each extend from the base. The first aperture may be in the base, the second aperture may be in the first finger, the third aperture may be in the second finger, and the fourth aperture may be in the third finger. The first aperture may be oriented vertically with the other apertures oriented horizontally.

Pivot fittings back up beam architecture

A vehicle, such as an aircraft, structural architecture for supporting a horizontal stabilizer with a back up beam having an upper longeron fitting connected to the front side and secured with a back up fitting on the back side, a lower longeron fitting connected to the front side and secured with a back up fitting on the back side, and a pivot fitting connected to the front side of the first back up beam in between the upper longeron fitting and the lower longeron fitting and secured with a third back up fitting on the back side of the back up beam.

Fiber-reinforced composites is provided. The composites include a plurality of prepreg layers, each comprising a polymeric resin and a plurality of fibers disposed therein; and at least one electrically-conductive layer at least partially embedded in the plurality of prepreg layers. These fiber-reinforced composites can save weight relative to externally provided wires and can be provided in forms suitable for use in automated fiber placement and automated tape layup machines. Advantageous applications include uses in lightning strike protection, energy storage, signal transmission, and power distribution.

Thin gel gasket and a method of making and using the same

A thin, cured gel gasket is disclosed, including methods of making the thin gel gasket and the use of the thin gel gasket in an aircraft joint. In one embodiment, the thin gel gasket has no skeleton or other structure and is comprised of only a cured polyurethane gel and has a thickness of less than about 12 mill. It is manufactured using a release film that is adapted in a number of ways to make release from the gel prior to use easier. In one method of making and using the thin gel gasket. it is applied to a joint which is subject to compression, in one embodiment, a lap joint of an aircraft fuselage.
