Horizontal tail load optimization system and method
10967951 · 2021-04-06 · ·

A method of controlling an elevator of an aircraft includes selecting a factor for increasing or decreasing a predetermined horizontal tail load alleviation (HTLA) authority limit for an elevator based on at least one aircraft parameter. The HTLA authority limit decreases with an increase in Mach number and/or airspeed. The method also includes computing an elevator position limit as a product of the HTLA authority limit and the factor, and moving the elevator to a commanded elevator position that is no greater than the elevator position limit.

Feed forward equalization control for active-active redundant actuation systems
10988237 · 2021-04-27 · ·

A method and apparatus for controlling movement of a component in a system by a plurality of actuators. An operation actuation command to move the component is received. For each of the plurality of actuators, the operation actuation command is used to generate a feed-forward equalization command for the actuator, the feed-forward equalization command for the actuator is combined with the operation actuation command to provide an equalized actuation command for the actuator, and the actuator is controlled to move the component using the equalized actuation command for the actuator.

System and method for distributed active fluidic bleed control

A system and method for regulating and actuating bleed over a structure exposed in a fluid motion are disclosed. The bleed inlet and outlet are formed on the surface of the structure establishing fluidic communication across surfaces. The disclosed system and method contemplates active control and regulation of the bleed to modify crossflow properties such as, aerodynamic forces, hydrodynamic forces, vorticity, and moments.

METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR REMOTE PILOTING A TWO-PILOT AIRCRAFT FOR EXTENDED FLIGHTS
20210061462 · 2021-03-04 ·

A system for both onboard piloting and remote piloting an aircraft having thereon at least one onboard pilot includes an aircraft having an onboard flight control system, onboard flight control devices, and onboard condition indicators mounted proximal the pilot seat. A remote flight control system, in electronic communication with the onboard flight control system, includes remote flight control devices and remote condition indicators. At least in a remote piloting mode, the onboard flight control system transmits flight and aircraft condition-related signals to the remote flight control system, receives flight control signals from the remote flight control system, and actuates, according to the flight control signals received from the remote flight control system, onboard actuators thereby remote piloting the aircraft. In the remote piloting mode, the aircraft may be cooperatively piloted by a remote pilot and at least one alert onboard pilot as another onboard pilot rests.

AIRCRAFT FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEMS THAT ACT SYMMETRICALLY TO CREATE AERODYNAMIC DRAG

During landing and rejected-takeoff flight phases, aircraft drag is a useful force to supplement braking and reduce stopping distance. During descents, aircraft drag is a useful force in steepening flight path angle and achieving higher rates of vertical descent speed at a trimmed forward flight speed in unaccelerated flight. A flight control system is detailed herein that deflects opposing flight control components in a symmetric fashion to increase aircraft drag, while maintaining controllability.

Guidance system and method for guiding projectiles

A projectile incorporates one or more spoiler-tabbed spinning disks to effect flow around the projectile and thus impart steering forces and/or moments. The spoiler tabs may be deployed only during steering phases of travel thus minimizing the drag penalty associated with steering systems. The disks are driven by motors and informed and controlled by sensors and electronic control systems. The spoiler tabs protrude through the surface of the projectile only for certain angles of spin of the spinning disk. For spin-stabilized projectiles, the disks spin at substantially the same rate as the projectile, but the disks may function in fin-stabilized projectiles as well. Any number of such spinning flow effector disks may be incorporated in a projectile, with the manner of functional coordination differing slightly for even and odd numbers of disks.
