Methods and systems for head up display (HUD) of aerial refueling operation status and signaling

Example methods and systems for providing information to a pilot of a receiver aircraft during a refueling operation are described. The refueling operation includes a tanker aircraft with a hose for supplying fuel to the receiver aircraft and a refueling coupler coupled to an end of the hose. One example method includes, receiving at a first transceiver located at the receiver aircraft refueling information from a second transceiver located at the tanker aircraft, receiving from a vision system located at the receiver aircraft image information indicative of the hose and the refueling coupler, and displaying, on a head up display (HUD) of the pilot of the receiver aircraft a visual representation of one or more of the refueling information and the image information.

Relative Navigation and Machine Vision for Automated Aerial Refueling System and Method

A system and method for Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) may combine unrelated capabilities to provide a high integrity solution to boom manipulation and insertion to couple with a receiver receptacle. Precise positioning systems on each aircraft coupled via data link provide a high integrity relative positioning solution generating a requisite integrity for positioning yet insufficient for boom insertion. High definition cameras onboard the tanker provide multi-wavelength remote vision digital images used to identify the boom fitting as well as the receptacle. Combined with boom position information from the tanker, the system determines pixel position inputs from stereo digital images to precisely identify the boom and receptacle and manipulate the boom to insert the boom fitting into the receptacle. Constant camera generated feedback and updated relative positioning alerts the system and disconnects the boom should the receiver aircraft stray outside the proper position.

In an example, method of dynamically suppressing background clutter in a stream of images is described. The method includes receiving a stream of images, wherein the stream of images comprises background objects and foreground objects, separating the stream of images into a first image set and a second image set, applying a grid to each image in the second image set, wherein the grid contains a plurality of grid cells, determining a movement of pixel content within each of the plurality of grid cells for each image of the second image set, extrapolating the movement of pixel content to a time of the first image set to obtain a time-adjusted second image set, and subtracting the time-adjusted second image set from the first image set to obtain a clutter-suppressed image set.

Haptic augmented reality device for facilitating actions on a flying boom

Haptic augmented reality device for facilitating the actions to control a boom in full flight, allowing the boom to be controlled with a single hand, without the need for any training in what the manoeuvres refer to. In addition, the system not only provides information concerning how the operation is being performed, but also provides assistance, indicating to the boomer when a particular movement is completely prohibited (making the movement impossible) or is not recommendable (making it necessary to apply more force to perform the movement).

A system is provided. The system includes a camera on a refueling aircraft to obtain an image of a receiver aircraft having a receptacle for refueling the receiver aircraft. The system also includes a processor on the refueling aircraft to determine an orientation and position of the receiver aircraft relative to the camera, a separation distance and respective positions of a refueling boom of the refueling aircraft and the receptacle. The processor also generates a display of a side perspective view of 3D models of the refueling boom and the receiver aircraft having the receptacle. The display of the side perspective view illustrates a current position of the refueling boom relative to a current position of the receptacle and enables an operator on the refueling aircraft to observe and guide the refueling boom to the receptacle.
