An original reading apparatus includes a reading unit, a pick-up roller, a feed roller, a conveyance roller, a conveyance motor, a clutch, and a controller unit to control the clutch and the conveyance motor such that the pick-up roller and the feed roller that receive a driving force from the conveyance motor rotate at a given rotation speed. The rotation speed is set to a first speed when reading an original having a first size at a first resolution, to a second speed higher than the first speed when reading an original having the first size at a second resolution lower than the first resolution, and to a third speed lower than the second speed, regardless of designation of the reading resolution, when reading an original having a second size smaller than the first size.

The movement mechanism moves the tray from a first position to a second position closer to the conveyor than the first position based on the detection that the document is placed on the tray, and after moving the tray from the first position to the second position, moves the tray to the first position based on a setting of a mixed stacking mode in which mixing of the documents with different sizes on the tray is permitted.

A controlling method for an image forming apparatus which has plural sheet containers and can perform printing by using a sheet contained in the sheet container is provided. When there is no sheet in at least one of the sheet containers, it is set whether to perform a notification in consideration of another sheet container. No sheet in the sheet container is detected. When it is not set to perform the notification in consideration of another sheet container, it notifies notification information of no sheet to a preset notification destination in accordance with the detection. When it is set to perform the notification in consideration of another sheet container and there is another sheet container containing a sheet corresponding to the sheet which should be contained in the sheet container in which there is no sheet, it does not notify the notification information in accordance with the detection.
