Devices, methods, and systems for splicing a trailing edge of an outgoing roll with a leading edge of a replacement roll with a lapless butt splice on-the-fly during converting and printing production. A first strip of adhesive tape may be placed partially under the leading edge, such that a portion of the adhesive tape remains exposed beyond the leading edge. The replacement roll may be accelerated to match the speed of the outgoing web's movement, a trailing edge of the outgoing web may be cut free from the outgoing roll, and the trailing edge of the outgoing roll may be positioned over the exposed portion of the adhesive tape. A second strip of adhesive tape may be applied over the leading edge and trailing edge using a splicer roller timed to apply the tape when the edges pass proximate to the splicer roller.

A web splicing apparatus is disclosed that includes a web unwinding unit configured to hold a running web material roll and a new web material roll and to unwind webbing from the running web material roll and a web splicing unit operable with the web unwinding unit to selectively splice the webbing of the running web material roll with webbing of the new web material roll. The web splicing unit further includes a cutting assembly configured to selectively sever the webbing of the running web material roll, a web deflection device, an actuator system configured to linearly translate the web deflection device in a first direction and a second direction opposite the first direction, and a locking mechanism operable in a locked state and an unlocked state to selectively prohibit and enable movement of the web deflection device in the first direction and the second direction.

A web splicing apparatus is disclosed that includes a web unwinding unit configured to hold a running web material roll and a new web material roll and to unwind webbing from the running web material roll and a web splicing unit operable with the web unwinding unit to selectively splice the webbing of the running web material roll with webbing of the new web material roll. The web splicing unit further includes a cutting assembly configured to selectively sever the webbing of the running web material roll, a web deflection device, an actuator system configured to linearly translate the web deflection device in a first direction and a second direction opposite the first direction, and a locking mechanism operable in a locked state and an unlocked state to selectively prohibit and enable movement of the web deflection device in the first direction and the second direction.

An unwinder for web material includes: a first and second reel holder, a dynamic storage device, a junction device arranged between the first or second reel holder and the dynamic storage device and configured to join an end portion of web material running out on the first reel to an initial portion of web material of the second reel, an actuator configured to pull the web material. The dynamic storage device includes: a plurality of first return rollers, a carriage mounted on a guide and free to move along the guide approaching or moving away from the first return rollers, a plurality of second return rollers mounted idly on the carriage. The return rollers define a zigzag path for the web material. The dynamic storage device includes a plurality of motorized shafts and each first return roller is mounted by means of two rolling bearings on a respective motorized shaft.

The automatic coiled material switching device implements the automatic switching of material belts of the left unwinding device and the right unwinding device by arranging the rotating main body, rotating mechanism, the turning mechanism, the driving mechanism, the pressing mechanism and the cutting mechanism.

At least one opposing surface of a pair of gripping parts is provided with a contact member having a contact surface projecting toward an other opposing surface of the pair of gripping parts; the pair of gripping parts grip ranges in proximity to end surfaces in a state in which end surfaces project from the one opposing surface toward the other opposing surface; the total of end surface projection amounts of the end surfaces from the opposing surfaces is set to be a predetermined length larger than a separation distance between the opposing surfaces when the contact member is sandwiched between the opposing surfaces; and by bringing the contact member into a state of being sandwiched between the opposing surfaces, the movement of the gripping parts in proximity to each other is stopped and the end surfaces are joined together.

The invention also provides a corresponding roll of adhesive and a corresponding connection method.
