Intermediates for the Synthesis of Bile Acid Derivatives, in Particular of Obeticholic Acid
The present invention relates to compounds which are intermediates in the synthesis of bile acid derivatives with pharmacological activity. The invention relates to compounds of general formula (I):

wherein: , R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6 and Y are as defined herein.
The compounds are intermediates in the synthesis of synthetic bile acids which are useful in the treatment of conditions such as liver disease. In addition, the invention relates to a method of synthesizing these intermediates and a method of preparing obeticholic acid and obeticholic acid analogues from the compounds of the invention.

NUCLEAR SULFATED OXYSTEROL, POTENT REGULATOR OF LIPID HOMEOSTASIS, FOR THERAPY OF HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA, HYPERTRIGLYCERIDES, FATTY LIVER DISEASES, AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS
The sulfated oxysterol 5-cholesten-3β, 25-diol 3-sulphate, a nuclear cholesterol metabolite that decreases lipid biosynthesis and increases cholesterol secretion and degradation, is provided as an agent to lower intracellular and serum cholesterol and/or triglycerides, and to prevent or treat lipid accumulation-associated inflammation and conditions associated with such inflammation. Methods which involve the use of this sulfated oxysterol to treat conditions associated with high cholesterol and/or high triglycerides and/or inflammation (e.g. hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, atherosclerosis, etc.) are also provided.

METHOD FOR HOMOGENIZING BILE ACID DERIVATIVES
The present invention relates to a process for producing bile acid derivatives having a protected hydroxyl group in the 3 position comprising contacting a bile acid derivative having an unprotected 3-alpha-hydroxyl group with a specific lipase. The present invention further relates to a bile acid derivative obtained or obtainable by the process, to the use of the bile acid derivative obtained or obtainable by the process for producing lithocholic acid and also to a process for producing lithocholic acid and to lithocholic obtained by the process. The invention further relates to the use of lithocholic acid obtained or obtainable by the process for producing ursodeoxycholic acid or ursodeoxycholic acid derivatives.
