This polymer can be pre-functionalized boronic ester or functionalized on addition of the said additive. In particular, the invention relates to a process enabling the behavior of a polymer to be modified by addition of a functional additive, enabling a cross-linked network containing exchangeable boronic ester links to be formed.

Low VOC, water-based coating compositions suitable for protecting metal containing substrates including food and beverage packages
Coating compositions and methods of using these compositions to form tough, abrasion resistant, and water resistant coatings on metal-containing substrates are described. Coating compositions are derived from one or more ingredients comprising at least one copolymer, referred to herein as Copolymer I, that preferably comprises (a) one or more repeating units (Repeating Unit(s) A) comprising at least one hydrophilic ester functionality and at least one polar functionality; and (b) one or more additional kinds of copolymerizable repeating units (Repeating Unit(s) B). Preferably, repeating Unit(s) A are a residue of an unsaturated monoester of a diacid or anhydride thereof having a carbon-carbon double bond, wherein at least one hydrophilic ester is pendant from a first carbon of the carbon-carbon double bond and at least on polar group is pendant from the second carbon of the carbon-carbon double bond. The monoester preferably is the reaction product of one or more water soluble or water dispersible alcohols with an unsaturated diacid or anhydride thereof.

Hydrophilic monolayer films
The invention provides monolayer films excellent in hydrophilicity and transparency which include a crosslinked resin having a surface enriched with hydrophilic groups, and materials which exhibit excellent properties such as hydrophilicity, antifogging properties and antifouling properties by virtue of having the above monolayer films. A monolayer film is fabricated which includes a crosslinked resin obtained by polymerizing a composition including a compound (I) having an anionic hydrophilic group and a functional group with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, and a compound (II) having three or more hydroxyl groups and three or more functional groups with a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, the monolayer film having a gradient (Sa/Da) of not less than 1.1 wherein Sa is the surface concentration of the anionic hydrophilic groups in the monolayer film, and Da is the deep concentration of the hydrophilic groups at of the thickness of the monolayer film.

Water-based polymer emulsions for opaque films and coatings applications on flexible substrates
A process of preparing a water-based emulsion includes adding a first monomer feed to a reaction vessel in the presence of a first initiator and water to form an acid-functional polymer; neutralizing the acid-functional polymer to form a particulate polymer; and adding a second monomer feed to the reaction vessel in the presence of a second initiator to form an agglomerated polymer; where the process is a one-pot process. The first monomer feed includes a unbranched (meth)acrylate monomer, a (meth)acrylic acid monomer, a branched (meth)acrylate, and a styrenic monomer; the second monomer feed includes a hydrophobic monomer; the water-based emulsion includes the agglomerated polymer; the agglomerated polymer includes the particulate polymer; and the agglomerated polymer having an aggregated drupelet morphology. The agglomerated polymers may be used in high opacity emulsions.
