High Performance Reactive Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Composition

Provided herein is a high performance reactive pressure sensitive adhesive (HPR-PSA) formulation which can be compounded and coated on facestock at ambient temperatures. Upon curing by exposing to a high temperature, the HPR-PSA becomes a structural adhesive with superior mechanical performance. This HPR-PSA formulation comprises the unique mixture of the SIS and SB rubber, hydrocarbon and rosin resins tackifiers, and a phenolic derivative curing agent.

This invention relates to a curable composition comprising: I. CONTROLLED CURE FOR COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING ACETOACETYLATED RESINS

This invention relates to a curable composition comprising: I. Component (I) comprising a resin having at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of -ketoester and malonate functional groups; II. Component (II) comprising at least one curing agent having at least one aldehyde functional group, wherein said Component (II) is optionally latent; III. Component (III) comprising at least one amine, salts thereof, or combinations thereof; wherein before addition of Component (III), the reactivity of the composition is delayed by at least one of the following: (III)(a) at least one of said Components (I), (II), and (III), or any reaction product thereof, or any combination thereof is a solid; or at least one of Components (II) or (III) or any combination thereof is insoluble in the resin under pot life conditions; or (III)(b) at least one said amine is first reacted with at least one aldehyde, ketone, acetal or ketal, or mixtures thereof, optionally, to form a solid; (III)(c) at least one said amine is first reacted with a portion of Component (II), wherein the reaction product thereof is optionally reacted or combined subsequently with additional amounts of either or both of Components (II) and (III), and, prior to reaction of Components (I)-(III), and is optionally combined with at least one amine reactivity delayer; or (III)(d) at least one said amine is first reacted with all of Component (II) wherein the reaction product is a combination of Components (II) and (III) and no additional amounts of Component (II) or Component (III) are reacted with said composition; or combinations of reaction products as described in (III)(d); and optionally, IV. Component (IV) comprising at least one reactivity delayer which is combined with Component (II), or Component (III), or a combination thereof.

ADHESIVE STRAIN SENSING PODS

An adhesive strain sensing pod includes at least one strain sensor, electronics for electrically sensing at least one strain signal from the at least one strain sensor, and a sensor adhesive for adhering the strain sensor to a surface of a structural element. The pod may have a protective case for protecting the strain sensor and the electronics and for transferring at least part of a force, pressing the pod against the surface, to press the strain sensor against the surface. The sensor adhesive may be a liquid adhesive contained in a fragile pouch that ruptures when the pod is forced against the surface, or may be a thermally activated adhesive film that is activated to bond the strain sensor to the surface. A protective film may protect the sensor adhesive prior to installation of the pod and is removed prior to installation of the pod on the surface.
