Method of lubricating a mechanical device with high pyrophosphate level lubricant

A lubricant composition is provided containing an oil of lubricating viscosity and a substantially sulfur-free alkyl phosphate amine salt, where at least 30 mole percent of the phosphorus atoms are in an alkyl pyrophosphate salt structure, along with either or both of a conventional phosphorous containing antiwear additive and a glycerol ester. In the phosphate amine salt, at least 80 mole percent of the alkyl groups are typically secondary alkyl groups of 3 to 12 carbon atoms. A method of improving wear over a wide temperature range in a mechanical device is also provided by employing the lubricant composition.

Low viscosity lubricating oil composition

Provided is an internal combustion engine lubricating oil composition having a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity; a combination of alkaline earth metal alkylhydroxybenzoate detergents; at least about 50 to about 500 ppm of boron from a boron containing detergent; a molybdenum containing compound in an amount to provide the lubricating oil composition from about 100 to about 1500 ppm molybdenum; a ZnDTP compound; where the composition comprises magnesium in an amount from about 100 to about 800 ppm, and calcium in an amount from about 500 to about 2000 ppm.

Additive concentrates

The use of berated dispersant, preferably in combination with polyalkylenyl succinic anhydrides, to stabilise an additive concentrate which includes a salicylate detergent and a nitrogen-free ashless organic friction modifier.

Lubricants for use in boosted engines

A lubricating oil composition and method of operating a boosted internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil composition includes greater than 50 wt. % of a base oil of lubricating viscosity, calcium, nitrogen, molybdenum and boron. The weight ratio of Ca:N (ppm/ppm) in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 1.3 to less than 3.0, the weight ratio of Ca:Mo (ppm/ppm) in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 6.7 to less than 56.3, and the weight ratio of Ca:B (ppm/ppm) in the lubricating oil composition is greater than 5.0 to less than 9.8. The lubricating oil composition does not contain added magnesium from a magnesium-containing detergent. The lubricating oil composition is resistant to deposit formation in the boosted internal combustion engine, as shown by its ability to ensure a TCO Temperature Increase of less than 9.0% as measured using the 2015 version of the General Motors dexos1® Turbocharger Coking Test.

Disclosed is a lubricating oil composition containing a base oil, a viscosity index improver, a molybdenum-based friction modifier, a boron-containing dispersant, and at least two extreme-pressure additives selected from a sulfur-based extreme-pressure additive, a phosphorous-based extreme-pressure additive and a sulfur/phosphorus-based extreme-pressure additive, or a sulfur/phosphorus-based extreme-pressure additive. The base oil is a synthetic oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of 3 mm.sup.2/s or more and 10 mm.sup.2/s or less, the viscosity index improver is a resin having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of 1,000 or more and 10,000 or less, the mass ratio of boron atoms (B) contained in the boron-containing dispersant to molybdenum atoms (Mo) contained in the molybdenum-based friction modifier, [(B)/(Mo)] is 1 or more and 5 or less, and the mass ratio of sulfur atoms (S) to phosphorus atoms (P) contained in the extreme-pressure additive(s), [(S)/(P)] is 10 or more and 20 or less.
