An article of footwear may include an upper and a sole structure fixedly attached to a bottom portion of the upper. The sole structure may include a sole component including a baseplate having a bottom surface and at least a first ground engaging member extending substantially downward from the bottom surface of the baseplate, the first ground engaging member having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. In addition, the sole structure may also include a tapered support structure having a substantially pyramidal shape and extending substantially downward from the bottom surface of the baseplate, abutting the first ground engaging member at a side portion, and partially surrounding the first ground engaging member such that a portion of the first ground engaging member is exposed between edges of the tapered support structure. Also, the tapered support structure may extend downward from the baseplate less than the first ground engaging member.

A footwear covering assembly for protecting surfaces includes a panel. The panel is shaped substantially complementarily to an outsole of an item of footwear. The panel is flexible and substantially impermeable to water. An adhesive is coupled to an upper surface of the panel. The adhesive is dry and moisture activated. The adhesive is configured to contact the outsole of the item of the footwear so that the adhesive is activated. The adhesive is configured to couple the panel to the outsole. The panel is configured to retain debris and moisture between the panel and the outsole to protect surfaces.

A track and field shoe can include an upper, a sole structure, and a toe plate. The upper can include a medial side portion, a lateral side portion, and a toe box portion. The sole structure can be attached to the upper and can include a spike plate. The spike plate can have an anterior portion and a posterior portion. The toe plate can be attached to an anterior portion of the toe box portion of the upper and can include a hard and smooth outwardly facing surface. One or more portions of the toe plate can be exposed from an exterior surface of the upper.

A track and field shoe can include an upper, a sole structure, and a toe plate. The upper can include a medial side portion, a lateral side portion, and a toe box portion. The sole structure can be attached to the upper and can include a spike plate. The spike plate can have an anterior portion and a posterior portion. The toe plate can be attached to an anterior portion of the toe box portion of the upper and can include a hard and smooth outwardly facing surface. One or more portions of the toe plate can be exposed from an exterior surface of the upper.

An article of footwear with a cleated sole includes an upper with an affixed midsole and multiple cleat plates spaced from one another; and an outsole encircling at least one of the cleat plates, affixed to the midsole. The cleat plates include a flat base with at least one cleat extending perpendicular to the surface. The bases are more pliant than the cleats and the outsole is more pliant than the bases. The footwear is comfortable and allows the foot to be the primary acting force in the beginning of locomotion, contributing to the athlete's strength and health.

An article of footwear with a cleated sole includes an upper with an affixed midsole and multiple cleat plates spaced from one another; and an outsole encircling at least one of the cleat plates, affixed to the midsole. The cleat plates include a flat base with at least one cleat extending perpendicular to the surface. The bases are more pliant than the cleats and the outsole is more pliant than the bases. The footwear is comfortable and allows the foot to be the primary acting force in the beginning of locomotion, contributing to the athlete's strength and health.

Ground-engaging components for articles of footwear include: (a) an outer perimeter boundary rim that at least partially defines an outer perimeter of the ground-engaging component, wherein the outer perimeter boundary rim defines an open space at least at a forefoot support area of the ground-engaging component; and (b) a matrix structure extending at least partially across the open space at least at the forefoot support area to define an open cellular construction with plural open cells in the open space at least at the forefoot support area. A plurality of these open cells of the open cellular construction have openings with curved perimeters and no distinct corners. Additional aspects of this invention relate to ground-engaging components that are very lightweight yet very stiff, particularly in the forefoot support area. Two or more sizes of the ground-engaging components may be provided with substantially constant forefoot stiffness (optionally substantially constant over a size run).

Ground-engaging components for articles of footwear include: (a) an outer perimeter boundary rim that at least partially defines an outer perimeter of the ground-engaging component; and (b) an inner perimeter boundary rim that at least partially defines an inner perimeter of the ground-engaging component, wherein an open space is defined between a lateral side portion of the inner perimeter boundary rim and a medial side portion of the inner perimeter boundary rim.

An article of footwear has a sole including a toe portion and a heel portion, a toe bumper disposed on the toe portion, the toe bumper being configured to contact a ball, and a heel bumper disposed on the heel portion, the heel bumper being configured to contact the ball, wherein at least one of the toe bumper and the heel bumper has an asymmetric shape.
