Hardfacing process and parts produced thereby

A hardfacing process includes depositing a clad layer having a thickness greater than about 1 mm (0.04 in) on a surface of the component by arc welding, and creating a heat affected zone directly below the clad layer due to the depositing. The heat affected zone may be a region of the component where a lowest hardness is more than 40% lower than a base hardness of the component below the heat affected zone. The method may also include heat treating the component after the deposition such that the lowest hardness in the heat affected zone is restored to within about 15% of the base hardness of the component.

A method for manufacturing reinforced steel structural components is described. The method comprises providing a steel blank, selecting one or more reinforcement zones of the steel blank, locally depositing a material on the reinforcement zone to create a local reinforcement on a first side of the steel blank. Locally depositing a material on the reinforcement zone comprises supplying a reinforcement material to the selected reinforcement zone, and substantially simultaneously applying laser heating to melt the reinforcement material and a portion of the steel blank to mix the melted reinforcement material with the melted portion of the steel blank. The method further comprises forming the steel blank with the locally deposited material to shape the reinforced steel structural component. The disclosure further relates to reinforced components obtained using such methods and tools used in such methods.

A hollow screw and related process of making is provided, wherein the hollow screw is formed from a generally circular corrosion resistant stainless steel disk cut from flat roll stock. The hollow screw includes a head and an elongated and hollow shaft having a wall thickness between about 0.2 to about 0.7 millimeters extending therefrom and defining a shank portion and a threaded portion having a plurality of threads thereon with a rotational drive mechanism configured to facilitate tightening via the threads. The process involves annealing to soften the stamped hollow screw, followed by thread rolling, and then age hardening the hollow screw. As such, the resultant hollow screw is relatively lightweight, about 50% the mass of a solid core screw made from the same material, with a sufficient thread strength to meet most aerospace applications and contributes to important aircraft fuel economy.

LOW TEMPERATURE HARDENABLE STEELS WITH EXCELLENT MACHINABILITY
20180363110 · 2018-12-20 · ·

The present invention relates to the application of at least partially bainitic or interstitial martensitic heat treatments on steels, often tool steels or steels that can be used for tools. The first tranche of the heat treatment implying austenitization is applied so that the steel presents a low enough hardness to allow for advantageous shape modification, often trough machining. Thus a steel product is obtained which can be shaped with ease and whose hardness can be raised to a higher working hardness with a simple heat treatment at low temperature (below austenitization temperature).
