A vegetation maintenance system includes a permeable curb, a water-diversion layer, a water-storage layer, a nutrient layer, and a vegetation-planting trough. The permeable curb is located abutting roadside pavement edge of a road along a road direction. The water-diversion layer is located on a side surface of the permeable curb and is disposed close to a bottom of the permeable curb. The water-storage layer is disposed at one side of the water-diversion layer away from a surface of the road, and is configured to store water. The nutrient layer is disposed at one side of the water-storage layer away from the water-diversion layer, and is configured to provide water, soil, and nutrients for growth of vegetation. The vegetation-planting trough penetrates through the water-diversion layer and the water-storage layer, is embedded in the nutrient layer, and is configured for vegetation planting.

COMPOSITIONS, SYSTEMS, AND NEURAL NETWORKS FOR BIDIRECTIONAL ENERGY TRANSFER, AND THERMALLY ENHANCED SOLAR ABSORBERS

The present invention provides a bidirectional energy-transfer system comprising: a thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete, disposed in a structural object; a location of energy supply or demand that is physically isolated from, but in thermodynamic and/or electromagnetic communication with, the thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete; and a means of transferring energy between the structural object and the location of energy supply or demand. The system can be a single node in a neural network. The thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete includes a conductive, shock-absorbing material, such as graphite. Preferred compositions are disclosed for the thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete. The bidirectional energy-transfer system may be present in a solar-energy collection system, a grade beam, an indoor radiant flooring system, a structural wall or ceiling, a bridge, a roadway, a driveway, a parking lot, a commercial aviation runway, a military runway, a grain silo, or pavers, for example.

FOAMED GLASS COMPOSITE MATERIAL AND A METHOD USING THE SAME

A support structure, including an excavation and a plurality of irregularly shaped foamed glass bodies at least partially filing the excavation. Each respective irregularly shaped foamed glass body has an aspect ratio of about 1:1.7 and a diameter of about 1 inch. The irregularly shaped foamed glass bodies intersect to define stacking angles of at least about 35 degrees. Under compression, the irregularly shaped foamed glass bodies crush and break up before slip failure occurs such that the roadbed has a crushing failure mode.

Engineered Material Arrestor System

An aircraft arrestor system which provides a controllable deceleration force for an aircraft during an overrun event is disclosed. The arrestor systems arrest aircraft movement by creating a controllable deceleration force or drag force on the aircraft's landing gear. The aircraft arrestor system comprises an arresting medium which is contained by a plurality of adjacent containment cells. The arresting medium comprises smooth and rounded expanded glass particles which are loose and unbroken. The particles also have a controlled size range of about 0.04 inches to about 0.75 inches, and at least about 75% of the particles have a minimum size which is not less than about ¼ of the size of the largest particles.

STABILIZED AGGREGATES AND OTHER MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES FOR ENERGY ABSORPTION

Materials and structures for absorbing energy. The materials and structures are well suited for arresting aircraft and other vehicles, although their purposes need not be so limited. Also detailed are packaging and other solutions for maintaining system integrity, especially (but not exclusively) when foam glass or other aggregate is employed and stabilizing the location of the aggregate is desired.

A wearable computer is used for monitoring process data in road finishing. The wearable computer receives process data of the road finishing process. In the event of process data lying outside a predetermined range, the wearable computer effects alerting of the wearer of the wearable computer.

Decorative grating and method of manufacturing the same

A grating assembly and a method for manufacturing the same. The grating assembly comprises a plurality of crossbars that are secured together. The grating assembly includes a decorative image that is visible when approaching the grating. The image is formed by providing one or more image sections on one or more of the crossbars of the grating assembly. Each of the crossbars has a front surface and an opposed back surface and the one or more image sections are provided on one or both of the front surface and the back surface.

Modular cell and matrix for supporting a load bearing feature

A modular cell that may be used with other cells to form a matrix under a load bearing feature, the cell being a single piece molding that supports a compressive load placed thereon, the molding including a void space defined within: a skirt shaped support member defining a substantially planar surface with an opening therein; and at least one leg integral to and extending from the support member. The cell further includes at least one separate linking member that releasably links together multiple cells to form a matrix of cells. The cells may be linked together vertically and/or horizontally. The cell and matrix include greater load bearing capacity and rigidity through aligned legs to carry the weight as well as interlinking members that act to share the load among the various cells. The design also requires less material hence is cheaper to produce. The void space is also easily accessed hence allowing for easy access, filling and laying of utility lines where needed.
