The present invention is an improved footstep for an aircraft galley or similar monument that is retractable into the galley when not in use. The overall size of the footstep is significantly reduced by the use of a spring loaded detent mechanism. The present invention is designed to allow the footstep to remain in the deployed, horizontal position by means of a spring and plunger that cooperate to create a detent or over-center position. Further, the present invention permits the footstep to automatically return to the stowed position by virtue of the spring and plunger detent system.

A rotating retractable step system positioned within a cutout of a wall is presented. The rotating retractable step system comprises a foot pedal and a support shaft. The foot pedal is configured to be stowed in a vertical orientation within the cutout of the wall, and to rotate between the vertical orientation and a horizontal orientation. The support shaft is associated with the foot pedal, such that movement of the support shaft extends the foot pedal outwardly away from the cutout, or retracts the foot pedal towards the cutout.

The latch operates to lock the stepping stool in the deployed configuration and to secure and free the bracket, enabling movement of the stepping stool between the deployed and folded configurations. The backplate includes a track for removably receiving the stepping stool. The track enables the stepping stool to slide in and out thereof to attach and detach, respectively, for use at the cabinet or away from the cabinet. The track further enables the stepping stool to slide therethrough to contact a floor to support the cabinet while the apparatus is mounted thereon.

A configurable step assistant is provided that includes a first portion configured to be attached to a structure, a second portion pivotally connected to the first portion, the second portion being moveable between a first position and a second position with respect to the first portion, a third portion pivotally connected to the second portion, the third portion being moveable between a first position and a second position with respect to the second portion, wherein, when the second portion is in the second position and the third portion is in the second position, the second portion defines a step for accommodating a user.
