A combination exhaust gas heat exchanger and noise reduction unit is disclosed, whereby a heat exchanger and a noise reduction member are arranged side-by-side and integrated as a unit. A heat exchanger outlet opens directly into a chamber of the noise reduction member. In one arrangement, a bypass valve serves to selectively direct exhaust gas into either the heat exchanger or the noise reduction member, depending on an operating condition of an associated engine.

An emission signature modification device for modifying an acoustic signature of an exhaust gas stream, including an exhaust gas guiding device that guides the exhaust gas stream in the flow direction thereof from an inlet area to an outlet area. An active acoustic emission modification device modifies the acoustic emission of the exhaust gas stream in predetermined operating states. If an actuator system of the active acoustic emission modification device is designed such that in a circumferential direction, the actuator system is surrounded by more than 30% of the guided exhaust gas stream, the actuating system can be protected against harmful influences from the environment by way of the exhaust gas guiding device on the one hand, and on the other hand, the required space signifier can be reduced as compared to a lateral, external arrangement of the actuating system.

Next, the particulate filter is made to dry to thereby make the partition walls carry the catalyst on their surfaces or in their micropores.

The second flow channel is formed by an annular space between an at least partly perforated second pipe and an at least partly perforated third pipe. A sound absorbing material surrounds the bypass pipe and the third pipe, and is further arranged inside the second pipe.

In one example, the silencer comprises a noise-reducing structure and a heat sink to transfer heat from exhaust gases to the exterior of the silencer, the heat sink comprising two regions of fins which define a plurality of flow channels through the heat sink, the flow channels directing the flow of exhaust through the silencer from an inlet passage to an outlet passage. In this way, a temperature of the exhaust is reduced, and the silencer and downstream components of an exhaust system may be constructed of materials of a lower thermal tolerance.
