Cross-port air flow to reduce pumping losses

Cross-port air flow that improves engine fuel economy and reduces pumping losses during part-throttle operation can be implemented in various types of internal combustion engine systems using ports that interconnect the intake ports of different cylinders, thus allowing different cylinders to share combustion air. Cross-port air flow is commenced during part-throttle engine operation to disrupt the primary combustion air flow from each throttle to its associated cylinder, which reduces charge density and engine power. The engine compensates for the reduced power by incrementally opening the throttles, thus increasing the primary combustion air flow, reducing pumping losses and improving fuel economy.

System and method for engine control

Embodiments of the subject matter disclosed herein relate to controlling engine operating points and power for full throttle command in an off-highway vehicle, such as a diesel electric haul truck, to increase fuel efficiency. In one example, a system includes an engine and a controller. The controller is configured to determine a target engine horsepower and associated target engine speed, command the engine to operate at a first engine speed above the target engine speed, adjust a load placed on the engine to reach the target engine speed, and command the engine to operate at a second engine speed to reach the target engine horsepower.

Engine idle speed control

A method and a system for adjusting a base idle speed of an engine are described. In one example, the method reduces engine speed according to output of a sensor that senses mechanical vibrations. Once a vibration level exceeds a threshold, engine speed reduction ceases and the base engine idle speed is adjusted according to a present engine speed.

There is provided an engine rotation speed control device for performing over-speed rotation prevention control to decrease an engine rotation speed if the engine rotation speed exceeds a first upper limit rotation speed. If a gear position of a transmission is a neutral state or an intermediate neutral state in which predetermined gears are not engaged with each other in the middle of a gear change operation of the transmission, a second upper limit rotation speed which is lower than the first upper limit rotation speed is set. If the engine rotation speed at the time when the gear position of the transmission is the neutral state or the intermediate neutral state is higher than the second upper limit rotation speed, the over-speed rotation prevention control is performed.

An engine may include an engine including combustion chambers, an intake line connected to the plurality of combustion chambers and through which outside air supplied to the combustion chamber flows, an intake manifold connected to an intake side of the combustion chamber, an exhaust manifold connected to an exhaust side of the combustion chamber, an exhaust line connected to the exhaust manifold, a turbocharger including a compressor mounted in the intake line, and a turbine rotating in association with the compressor and connected to the exhaust manifold and the exhaust line, a wastegate passage bypassing the turbine from the exhaust manifold, an electric supercharger connected to the compressor of the turbocharger by the intake line, a power device electrically-connected to the electric supercharger and configured for supplying electric power to the electric supercharger or absorbing and storing electric power generated by the electric supercharger, and a controller for controlling the operation of the power device and the electric supercharger according to rotation speed of the engine.
