LEVERAGING A TURBOEXPANDER TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY IN COMPRESSED GAS FUELED SYSTEMS
Leveraging a turboexpander to provide additional functionality in compressed gas fueled systems is disclosed. The system includes a compressed gas storage device storing a compressed gas at a first pressure. A turboexpander operably coupled with the compressed gas storage device, the turboexpander comprising a turbine coupled with a drive shaft, the turboexpander to maintain the compressed gas below a threshold temperature limit as it controllably expands the compressed gas from the first pressure to the second pressure via an amount of work obtained from a rotation of the turbine and the drive shaft. A compressed gas receiving device to receive the compressed gas at the second pressure from the turboexpander and generate an amount of electrical energy from the compressed gas.
Electric fan
An electric fan for producing thrust to propel an aircraft is disclosed. The electric fan comprises a stator, a fan rotor rotatably mounted relative to the stator and an electric motor mounted to the stator and drivingly engaged with the fan rotor to cause rotation of the fan rotor relative to the stator. The fan rotor comprises an annular body defining a flow passage therethrough and a plurality of fan blades disposed in the flow passage and mounted for common rotation with the annular body about a fan rotation axis. The electric motor has a motor rotation axis that differs from the fan rotation axis.
Gas turbine engine with clutch assembly
A gas turbine engine is provided. The gas turbine engine includes a turbomachine having a low speed spool and a high speed spool; a rotor assembly coupled to the low speed spool; an electric machine rotatable with the low speed spool for extracting power from the low speed spool, for adding power to the low speed spool, or both; and an inter-spool clutch positioned between the low speed spool and the high speed spool for selectively coupling the low speed spool to the high speed spool.
HYBRID ELECTRIC IDLE AND BRAKING FOR AN AIRCRAFT
An engine system of an aircraft includes an energy storage system, a gas turbine engine, and a controller. The gas turbine engine includes a low spool, a high spool, a low-spool generator operably coupled to the low spool, and a high-spool electric motor operably coupled to the high spool. The controller is configured to detect a braking condition of the aircraft, transfer power from the low-spool generator to the energy storage system based on the storage capacity state of the energy storage system, and transfer power to the high spool through the high-spool electric motor to support combustion in the gas turbine engine while a rotational speed of the low spool is reduced responsive to the low-spool generator extracting energy from the low spool.
