A method for operating an ignition device for an internal combustion engine, in which via a rotating magnetic pole wheel a voltage signal with a number of positive and negative half-waves is produced in at least one coil arrangement that is located on a core leg of an iron core during each rotation of the magnetic pole wheel, wherein the voltage signal is used to determine the gap width of the air gap between the magnetic pole wheel and the core leg.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING OPERATION OF AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
An internal combustion engine is described and includes a combustion chamber formed by cooperation of a cylinder bore formed in a cylinder block, a cylinder head and a piston. A plasma ignition controller is electrically connected to a groundless barrier discharge plasma igniter that includes a tip portion disposed to protrude into the combustion chamber. A current sensor is disposed to monitor secondary current flow between the plasma ignition controller and the groundless barrier discharge plasma igniter. The plasma ignition controller is disposed to execute a plasma discharge event. A controller is disposed to monitor a magnitude of the secondary current flow via the current sensor during the plasma discharge event. The controller includes an instruction set executable to evaluate integrity of the groundless barrier discharge plasma igniter based upon the magnitude of the secondary current flow during the plasma discharge event.

The engine system includes an ignition timing control unit, a knocking detecting unit, a knocking retard control unit that retards the ignition timing of the ignition plug by a unit retard amount when the knocking detecting unit detects knocking, an abnormality judging unit that, when a state where the knocking detecting unit detects knocking at intervals within a predetermined time continues, judges that an abnormality has occurred based on a continued state of knocking detection, and an intake amount limiting unit that limits the intake amount of the engine based on judgment of an abnormality made by the abnormality judging unit.

An igniter semiconductor device and an igniter system can prevent the influence of a voltage drop of an ON signal voltage input to an input terminal and the influence of a surge voltage, allow a switching element to operate reliably, and prevent an ignition failure. The igniter semiconductor device includes an external terminal including at least an input terminal, an output terminal electrically connected to an ignition coil, a ground terminal, and a power supply terminal electrically connected to a regulated power supply wire outside the igniter semiconductor device. The ignited semiconductor device further includes a switching element for controlling current flowing in the ignition coil, and a driving circuit that receives power through the power supply terminal and drives the switching element based on a signal input from the input terminal.

Specific implementations of ignition interrupters may include a first conductive tab configured to couple to a spark plug; a second conductive tab configured to couple to a spark plug wire; a first tab holder coupled with the first conductive tab; a second tab holder coupled with the second conductive tab, where the second conductive tab overlaps with the first conductive tab; a sled positioned perpendicularly to a plane of the first conductive tab and the second conductive tab, the sled coupled between the first conductive tab and the second conductive tab; a first spring coupled to the sled; and a second spring coupled to the sled; where the sled may be configured to move to an open position in the gap between the first conductive tab and the second conductive tab, decompressing the first spring and the second spring.
