SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR RETROFITTING CABINETS WITH A RETRACTABLE SHELF TO ACCOMMODATE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY
The invention involves a system and method for retrofitting a cabinet to accommodate wheelchair accessibility, which employs a retractable shelf configured to expand and retract for concealing and revealing a wheelchair accessible space. In exemplary embodiments, the retractable shelf is situated between the left panel and the right panel and in proximity to a floor space of the cabinet, wherein the retractable shelf is configured to retract and expand to reveal or conceal the wheelchair accessible space. The retractable shelf may include a plurality of panels hingedly coupled together, such as a posterior panel and an anterior panel, some of the panels configured to fold, such that at least one of the plurality of panels folds on top of the posterior panel in order to reveal or conceal the wheelchair accessible space. The invention allows retrofitting of any type of cabinet for wheelchair accessibility.

Shelving System
A modular shelving unit includes a base plate that is planar in an expanded configuration. A first foldable wall is connected to a first side of the base plate. A second foldable wall is connected to a second side of the base plate. The first foldable wall has a first segment and a second segment, and the second foldable wall has a third segment and a fourth segment. The second and fourth segments are rotatable about a respective hinge to define an interior surface with its respective first or third segment when in the expanded configuration. Shelves extend from the interior surfaces in the expanded configuration. In the collapsed configuration, the second and fourth segments are rotated about their respective hinges out of planar with their respective first and third segments. Other embodiments of modular shelving units are described herein.

CABINET ASSEMBLY
A cabinet assembly and cabinet assembly kit include two side panels and a rear panel coupled by hinge assemblies. Each hinge assembly includes a first bracket, a second bracket, and a linkage. The first and second brackets each include a key that alternate to create a key channel when the one of the side panels is positioned at a generally right angle relative to the rear panel. Each hinge assembly permits the cabinet assembly to be configured in a folded configuration in which the side panels are parallel with the rear panel. A locking bracket includes a locking member sized and shaped to be inserted into the key channel. The locking bracket locks the side panel into a substantially right angle relative to the rear panel when the locking member is inserted into the key channel.
