Embodiments provide a unidirectional multi-path kiln with two or more chambers and generally parallel flow paths extending through the kiln, on opposite sides, from charge entry portals at a first end of the kiln to charge exit portals at a second end of the kiln. Moist heated air flowing from the second heated chamber is received in the first chamber and circulated around the lumber charges with one or more fans. The lumber charges proceed in the same direction on the flow paths through the heated second chamber, which may be an existing kiln. Charge exit portals at the distal end of the kiln and/or intermediate charge portals between the second chamber and a third chamber may be provided with insulating members configured to reduce airflow from the second chamber through the charge exit portals.

An apparatus and method for cooking, heating, or drying in which, as items or materials are conveyed through a heating chamber by a linear, spiral, or other type of conveyor, hot combustion product gases are delivered upwardly through an upwardly extending first annulus or other flow gap which is closest to the conveyor. The hot combustion product gases are then delivered downwardly through the heating chamber into contact with the items or materials on the conveyor. Next the combustion product gases are delivered from the lower portion of the heating chamber into the lower portion of a second annulus or other flow gap or passage. The second flow gap or passage is separated from the heating chamber by the first annulus or other flow gap. Subsequently, the combustion product gases are delivered upwardly through the second flow gap or passage.

METHOD TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF REMOVAL OF LIQUID WATER FROM SOLID BULK FUEL MATERIALS
The invention provides methods to efficiently reduce the water concentration of raw solid fuels, including low rank coals such as brown coal, lignite, subbituminous coal, and other carbonaceous solids. Efficiently drying these materials at low temperatures significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and allows the production of low-rank coals for gasification and liquifaction.

A system for dewatering a material comprising a first storage for holding a material, the first storage operably connected to a slitter, wherein the slitter receives the material, separates the material into a plurality of clumps, and deposits the plurality of clumps of material substantially evenly on a conveyor belt, wherein the conveyor belt is partially porous to allow water to pass through but preventing material from passing through the conveyor belt, and wherein the conveyor belt is operable to convey the material from the slitter to a compression zone; the compression zone comprises at least one high pressure press, the at least one high pressure press comprises at least one hydraulic actuator operably connected to at least one compression plate, the at least one compression plate having a top surface, a bottom surface, and plurality of side surfaces, wherein the at least one hydraulic actuator articulates the at least one compression plates to engage the material positioned on the conveyor belt; the bottom surface comprises a recess substantially proximate the plurality of side surfaces, wherein the recess receives a seal when the at least one compression plate actuates to engage the material on the conveyor belt so the seal forms a substantially water-impervious barrier between the at least one compression plate and the conveyor belt defining a cavity in which the material is compressed; at least one knife positioned proximate the at least one compression plate operable to remove material from the bottom surface of the at least one compression plate after a compression cycle; and at least one drain positioned under the conveyor belt to carry water removed from the material away from the conveyor belt.
