Methods and instrumentation for detection of transverse rolling contact fatigue rail defects within head-hardened rail
There is provided detection instrumentation for the detection of transverse rail defects in rail head hitherto considered untestable on account of acoustic signal attenuation problems of horizontal lamination defects. The detection instrumentation comprises a pulse-echo acoustic transducer having a wear face for contacting a fillet of the rail and being aimed towards a head of the rail such that the transmitter transmits acoustic signals into the head and the receiver receives acoustic signals reflected at differing depths within the head. A signal receiver operably coupled to the receiver times the acoustic signals according to a timeseries railhead depth position scale. Analysis of the depth positions of the reflected acoustic signals according to relative positioning of the instrumentation along the rail may identify the transverse rail defects.
NONDESTRUCTIVE INSPECTION METHOD AND NONDESTRUCTIVE INSPECTION SYSTEM
According to an embodiment, a nondestructive inspection method includes: detecting, by a plurality of sensors installed in a truck that supports a vehicle body, an elastic wave generated when a lifting member inserted between the vehicle body and the truck moves the vehicle body up and down; and estimating, by an evaluation device, a position of a defect in the truck, based on the elastic wave detected by the plurality of sensors.
SENSOR DEVICE INCLUDING A SENSOR FOR CARRYING OUT SURROUNDING-AREA MONITORING WITH THE AID OF SONIC WAVES
A sensor device, including a sensor having a sound transducer to emit sonic waves and convert received sonic waves to electrical signals. A sensor evaluation unit carries out surrounding-area monitoring during a normal operation of the sensor, by evaluating electrical signals of the sound transducer. During a monitoring mode of the sensor, a monitoring unit of the sensor device measures an impedance of the sound transducer for different excitation frequencies of excitation signals produced with a signal generator of the sensor device. The sensor device includes a first and a second signal path, which are each connected to the sound transducer and are connectable to the signal generator. To reset the sensor from normal operation to the monitoring mode, a first control unit of the sensor device is configured to decouple the signal generator from the first signal path and to connect it to the second signal path.
Method for determining density of fresh concrete, computing device and system therefore
There is disclosed a computer-implemented method for determining a density value of a fresh concrete sample using an acoustic probe assembly. The acoustic probe assembly has an acoustic path, an acoustic emitter configured to emit an acoustic signal along the acoustic path, and an acoustic receiver configured to receive the acoustic signal after propagation along the acoustic path. The acoustic probe assembly is configured and adapted to generate an electromagnetic signal indicative of a duration of time taken by the acoustic signal to travel from the acoustic emitter to the acoustic receiver across the fresh concrete sample. The method generally has a step of determining the duration of time based on the electromagnetic signal, a step of matching the duration to a density value using reference data, and a step of displaying the density value.

Multi-modal biosensor having an acoustic detector with integrated optical interferometry
A multi-modal biosensor system includes a vibrating plate orientated along a plane. An actuator is interfaced with the vibrating plate and operable to vibrate the vibrating plate along the plane. The actuator includes two electrodes rigidly affixed to the vibrating plate. An optical support structure is rigidly affixed to the vibrating plate, and provides an outwardly facing surface to receive a measurement sample. A light source is configured to project light onto the outwardly facing surface of the optical support structure. A light detector is configured to capture light reflected from the outwardly facing surface of the optical support structure. A controller interfaces with the two electrodes and the light detector. The controller operates to detect changes in the vibrating motion of the vibrating plate concurrently with detecting changes in the light captured by the light detector.
