Directing a drilling operation using an optical computation element
Various embodiments include apparatus and methods to operate a tool downhole in a well, where the tool has an optical computation element to determine different properties of downhole structures. Such an optical computation element can be structured to provide optical analysis of fluid and material composition of the downhole environment associated with a drilling operation. The data measurements from the optical computation element can be used in a geosteering operation. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.
Multi-sensor contamination monitoring
A downhole sampling tool is operated to obtain formation fluid from a subterranean formation, which then flows through a flowline of the downhole sampling tool. Real-time density and optical density sensors of the downhole sampling tool are co-located proximate the flowline. Contamination of the formation fluid in the flowline is then determined based, at least in part, on the real-time density and optical density measurements obtained utilizing the co-located sensors.

Advanced multi-camera imaging system with polarization responsive antennas
An imaging system includes a first camera and a second camera. A first antenna arrangement collects image light from a first scene as seen by the first camera, and a second antenna arrangement collects image light from a second, different scene as seen by the second camera. The first antenna arrangement includes a first polarized dish antenna and the second antenna arrangement includes a second polarized dish antenna. The first camera and the second camera are supported with a first polarization of the first polarized dish antenna orthogonal to a second polarization of the second polarized dish antenna such that at least some of the image light from the first scene travels through the second polarized dish antenna to reach the first camera and at least some of the image light from the second scene travels through the first polarized dish antenna to reach the second camera.
Control mechanism and method using RGB light emitting diodes
A control mechanism and method using RGB (red-green-blue) light emitting diodes (LEDs) are disclosed. A particular embodiment includes: a red-green-blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) having a plurality of color components, each color component being either active or inactive; and an input controller coupled to each of the plurality of color components to determine a voltage level thereon, the input controller being configured to detect a voltage change in an inactive color component when light from an active color component is reflected off of a proximate object.
Fluorescent dye loaded polymeric taggants for depth determination in drilling wells
A method of surface logging a well includes adding each of multiple polymeric taggants to a circulating drilling fluid in an addition sequence while drilling the well. Each polymeric taggant includes a polymer and a respective fluorescent dye having an emission wavelength or excitation wavelength different from that of each other fluorescent dye. The method includes taking a sample of drill cuttings carried by a drilling fluid while drilling a well, wherein the sample of drill cuttings includes polymeric taggants attached to the drill cuttings. The method includes extracting the dyes from the sample of drill cuttings into an extract solution; determining an indication of the type of and the concentration of each of the dyes in the extract solution; and determining a depth associated with the sample of drill cuttings based on the indication of the concentration of each of the dyes and on the addition sequence.
