Embodiments of an embedded mm-wave radio integrated circuit into a substrate of a phased array module are disclosed. In some embodiments, the phased array module includes a first set of substrate layers made of a first material. The mm-wave radio integrated circuit may be embedded in the first set of substrate layers. A second set of substrate layers may be coupled to the first set of substrate layers. The second set of substrate layers may be made of a second material that has a lower electrical loss than the first material. The second set of substrate layers may include a plurality of antenna elements coupled through vias to the mm-wave radio integrated circuit.

An example antenna may include a planar dielectric substrate, a primary conductive area on a first surface of the planar dielectric substrate, a first secondary conductive area on the first surface, and a second secondary conductive area, and a ground plane on a second surface, on other side of the planar dielectric substrate. The primary conductive area may have a shape defining a first region of the first surface bounded by at least a portion of the primary conductive area, and a second region that includes a remaining portion of the first surface; a first secondary conductive area on the first surface, wherein the first secondary conductive area lies in the first region of the first surface. The second secondary conductive area may be provided on the first surface, and may lie in the second region.

MULTIBAND GUIDING STRUCTURES FOR ANTENNAS

Multiband guiding structures for antennas and methods for using the same are described. In one embodiment, an antenna comprises: an antenna aperture with radio-frequency (RF) radiating antenna elements; and a center-fed, multi-band wave guiding structure coupled to the antenna aperture to receive a feed wave in two different frequency bands and propagate the feed wave to the RF radiating antenna elements of the antenna aperture.

An antenna module that includes an antenna substrate, a plurality of three-dimensional (3-D) antenna cells on a first surface of the antenna substrate, a plurality of packaged circuitry on a second surface of the antenna substrate, and a plurality of supporting balls mounted on the second surface of the antenna substrate. The plurality of packaged circuitry includes a plurality of radio-frequency (RF) chips on the second surface of the antenna substrate. Each of the plurality of 3-D antenna cells comprises a raised antenna patch with a plurality of projections and a plurality of supporting legs, where at least a relief cut is provided between one of the plurality of projections and one of the plurality of supporting legs.

A phased array antenna includes multiple antenna elements where each antenna element is an antenna apparatus that includes an antenna integrated with a filter. Each antenna apparatus includes a plurality of resonators where at least some of the resonators are each enclosed in a metal cavity and at least one resonator is exposed to free space to form a radiator element. Each antenna apparatus has a filter transfer function that is at least partially determined by dimensions of the radiator element and the position of the radiator element within the antenna apparatus. The scan volume of the phased array antenna is dependent on at least one physical dimension of the filter of the antenna apparatus.

A first signal source is capable of feeing a first current signal to the first conductive branch through the first resonance circuit and the first feeding point, enabling the first conductive branch to radiate a first radio frequency signal. The second signal source is capable of feeding a second current signal to the second conductive branch through the second feeding point, enabling the second conductive branch, under a resonance of the second resonance circuit, to radiate a second radio frequency signal.
