A method for detecting fault in a power transmission line of a power transmission system and protection system using the same. The method includes: obtaining a system parameter of the power transmission system, adjusting protection reachability of a fault detecting element based on the obtained system parameter such that the adjusted protection reachability of the fault detecting element is applicable to a predetermined protection range, identifying whether there is an internal fault occurring on the transmission line using the adjusted fault detecting element, and generating a fault detection decision signal indicating the identified fault. If the predetermined protection range is desirable for the fault detecting element, its protection reachability may be adjusted in consideration of the influence imposed by the SIR such that the reach point of the adjusted fault detecting element can be extended to approach the end of the predetermined protection range. Consequently, the influence on its accuracy by various SIR values can be taken into account and accordingly the fault detecting solution can remove substantial errors as a result thereof.

The method comprises: collecting three-phase AC currents on a valve-side of a converter, a DC current on a high-voltage side and a DC current on a neutral terminal; selecting a minimum value of an absolute value of the three-phase AC currents on the valve side as an AC characteristic quantity, and selecting a maximum value of the DC current on the high-voltage side and the DC current on the neutral terminal as a DC characteristic quantity; according to the AC characteristic quantity and the DC characteristic quantity, constructing a minimum characteristic quantity; comparing the minimum characteristic quantity with a first preset threshold, and outputting a commutation judgment result; according to the commutation judgment result, constructing a commutation time interval; comparing the commutation time interval with a second preset threshold and a third preset threshold, and outputting a commutation failure protection judgment result to determine whether a commutation failure occurs. The invention uses minimum current sequence characteristics to track a commutation process of a converter valve, and when a commutation failure occurs, it may make timely, accurate and reliable judgment, thereby ensuring safe operation of valve equipment.

In aspects of the present disclosure, a circuit interrupter includes a housing, a conductive path, a switch which selectively interrupts the conductive path, sensor(s), memory, and a controller within the housing. The sensor(s) measure electrical characteristic(s) of the conductive path. The memory stores an arc detection program that implements a machine learning model and includes a field-updatable program portion and a non-field-updatable program portion, where the field-updatable program portion includes program parameters used by the non-field-updatable program portion to decide between presence or absence of an arc fault. The controller executes the arc detection program to compute input data for the machine learning model based on the sensor measurements, decide between presence of an arc event or absence of an arc event based on the input data, and cause the switch to interrupt the conductive path when the decision indicates presence of an arc event.
