FORCE APPLICATION DEVICE FOR AN ACTIVE MINI-STICK AND MECHANICAL BACKUP CONTROL METHOD
A force application device for an aircraft control stick in provided. The device includes a mechanical joint, a force motor, a rheological brake, and a control device. The mechanical joint receives a lever of an aircraft pilot stick and is rotatably movable. The force motor includes a motor shaft extending along a third axis, the rotation of the motor shaft being linked to the rotation of the mechanical joint. The force motor exerts a resistive torque on the motor shaft. The rheological brake includes two facing parts, and has a volume delimited by the two facing parts, the volume being adapted to contain a rheological material. One of the parts is arranged on the motor shaft and rotatably movable about the third axis relative to the other of the parts. The control device applies an electromagnetic field within the volume so as to vary shear strength of the rheological material.

SLOTLESS BRUSHLESS MOTOR-DRIVEN THROTTLE VALVE DEVICE, ENGINE, AND VEHICLE
The present invention provides a compact throttle valve device with good valve responsiveness and small unnecessary vibrations, an engine, and a vehicle. A slotless brushless motor-driven throttle valve device has a throttle body provided with a tubular portion in which an intake air passage is formed, a throttle valve disposed in the tubular portion, and a slotless brushless motor serving as a drive motor for performing opening/closing drive for the throttle valve. The throttle body housing has a hole portion into which a fixing member for fixing the throttle body to a member to be attached is inserted. The hole portion is formed in the vicinity of the outer circumferential portion of the tubular portion. The compact, narrow slotless brushless motor is disposed near the hole portion formed in the throttle body, and the throttle valve device is very compact.

Pop-Up Laminate Structure Including Miniature Optical Components
A pop-up laminate structure includes rigid layers, at least one flexible layer, at least one optical component, and an actuator. At least one of the rigid layers defines gaps extending there through to form a plurality of rigid segments separated by the gaps in the rigid layer. The flexible layer is bonded to the rigid segments to form joints for folding. The optical component is mounted to a rigid layer and configured to generate, capture or alter a light beam. The actuator is mounted to at least one of the rigid layers and configured to displace at least one rigid segment that, in turn, displaces the optical component. At least some of the layers are bonded to adjacent layers only at selected locations forming islands of inter-layer bonds to allow expansion of the laminate into an expanded three-dimensional structure.
