Optical transceiver
11700062 · 2023-07-11 · ·

A simple, compact and low-cost passive optical transceiver device with four terminals may be used in an optical transmission system with polarization-diversity coherent detection scheme. The transceiver is composed of a first polarization splitter/combiner, a non-reciprocal polarization rotator and a second polarization splitter/combiner. The device simultaneously operates as a transmitter and a receiver with optical signals propagating along opposite directions wherein non-reciprocal polarization rotation leads to distinct effects. The received optical signal is thus split into two orthogonal polarization components directed towards two separate ports.

Optical based placement of an optical component using a pick and place machine

An optical pick and place machine that includes a self-calibrating optical controller for error feedback based optical placement of optical components using active alignment is described. The optical controller can include a loopback mode to generate a baseline value of light generated by a light source and measured by a photodetector within the optical controller. The optical controller can further include an active alignment mode in which the light is coupled from the pick and place machine to the optical device on which the component is placed. The optical coupling of the placed component can be evaluated against the baseline value to ensure that the optical coupling is within specification (e.g., within a prespecified range).

An example optical amplifier may include an optical gain medium and an optical bandpass filter. The transmitted optical beam may have a transmit wavelength selectable from a plurality of transmit wavelength, and may have a different wavelength from the received optical beam. In some examples, the optical configuration may include at least one dichroic element. Various other devices, systems, and methods are described.

Optical receiver

Disclosed is an optical receiver. The optical receiver includes a circuit board, a base member, a photodetector mounted on the base member, a transimpedance amplifier, and a capacitor. The base member is disposed between a first grounding pattern and a second grounding pattern on a first side of the circuit board. The transimpedance amplifier is mounted on the first grounding pattern. The capacitor is mounted on the second grounding pattern. The first wiring pattern and the second wiring pattern are apart from both the first grounding pattern and the second grounding pattern in a plan view of the first side. The first grounding pattern is electrically connected to the second grounding pattern through a grounding pattern formed on the first side.

Pathloss optimization for optical systems

Methods include, for each of a plurality of pluggable optical transceivers that are fiber-coupled to respective inputs of a passive wavelength division multiplexer having a predetermined loss profile defining a path specific loss between each input and a common output, sending an optical output signal along an optical signal path while the other optical transceivers of the plurality are not sending optical output signals and measuring an optical power of the sent optical output signal at an input of a local optical amplifier downstream from an output of the wavelength division multiplexer, wherein the local optical amplifier is configured to transmit the optical output signals to a distant location, and, based on the measured optical powers, determining a loss distribution across the optical output signals at the input of the local optical amplifier by subtracting the predetermined path specific losses of the wavelength division multiplexer, comparing a variation in the loss distribution to a nominal variation to determine a defect in a transceiver fiber path associated with a higher loss component of the distribution where the variation exceeds the nominal variation, comparing an average or maximum loss in the loss distribution to a nominal average or maximum allowable loss to determine a defect in a common fiber path downstream from the multiplexer, and adjusting one or more of the optical powers of the optical output signals produced by the optical transceivers before transmission through the multiplexer, by an optical power offset that produces a predetermined flat optical power spectrum profile at the input of the local optical amplifier and that increases a transmission distance over which the optical output signals decodably propagate.
