A water- and oil-proofing composition which can provide an article with high utility oil resistance is provided. A water- and oil-proofing composition comprising a fluorinated polymer comprising units based on the following monomer (a) and units based on the following monomer (b), a fatty acid ester of polyglycerin and an aqueous medium: Monomer (a): a compound represented by CH.sub.2═CH—R.sup.f (wherein R.sup.f is a C.sub.1-8 perfluoroalkyl group). Monomer (b): a monomer copolymerizable with the monomer (a).

A multiphase emulsion polymer for aqueous coating compositions containing little or no organic solvent includes at least one soft phase and at least one hard phase prepared by a multi-stage emulsion polymerization. The hard phase contains a hard phase polymer having a glass transition temperature in a range from 10 C to 100 C which is more than 50 C higher than that of the soft phase polymer. The hard phase is formed as a first stage polymer and the one soft phase is subsequently polymerized in the presence of the first stage polymer. The hard phase polymer includes at least one carboxylic acid monomer and at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer. A method of making a multiphase emulsion polymer for aqueous coating compositions containing zero or low levels of organic solvent is disclosed. Such aqueous coating compositions may simultaneously have excellent block resistance, freeze thaw stability and low temperature coalescence characteristics.

An aqueous coating composition is provided that is useful in coating a variety of substrates, including interior or exterior portions of food or beverage cans. The coating composition includes a resin system that includes a multi-stage latex. In some embodiments, the multi-stage latex is formed using a process that includes emulsion polymerizing two or more stages in the presence of an aqueous dispersion including a water-dispersible polymer. In certain preferred embodiments, the water-dispersible polymer is a polyether polymer.

STYRENE-FREE COATING COMPOSITIONS FOR PACKAGING ARTICLES SUCH AS FOOD AND BEVERAGE CONTAINERS
A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes an emulsion-polymerized latex copolymer having copolymer chains of one or more ethylenically-unsaturated monomers and one or more styrene offset monomers. Preferably, the coating composition is substantially free of BPA, PVC, and styrene. The method may also include curing the sprayed coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.
