A system and method for preparing a consumable beverage. The system includes an apparatus including a first brew chamber part having a cavity for selectively holding an exchangeable first or second capsule. An exit area of the second capsule has a diameter that is larger than a diameter of an first exit area of the first capsule. The apparatus includes a second brew chamber part for closing the first brew chamber part around the first or second capsule. The second brew chamber part has an extraction plate for abutting against the first or second exit area. The extraction plate includes a central portion and a peripheral portion. The central portion is movable relative to the peripheral portion.

A coffee holder includes a holder body and a holder lid. The holder body includes a holder base, a holder sidewall extending from the base and defining an interior configured to receive loose coffee, and an open receiving end opposite the base. The holder lid is configured to engage the holder body to cover the open receiving end. The holder lid includes a recessed portion that extends into the holder body interior when the holder lid engages the holder body, and a passage in the recessed portion configured to allow fluid to flow into the holder body interior from the recessed portion.

A system for preparing a quantity of beverage suitable for consumption includes a second exchangeable capsule having a second body with a second flange-like rim and a second exit face attached to the second flange-like rim. The system further includes an apparatus for preparing a quantity of beverage suitable for consumption having a first brew chamber part having a cavity for holding the second exchangeable capsule and a second brew chamber part for closing the first brew chamber part around the second exchangeable capsule. The first brew chamber part has a first substantially annular abutment surface in the cavity and further has a second substantially annular abutment surface. A diameter of the second annular abutment surface is larger than a diameter of the first annular abutment surface. The second abutment surface is arranged for abutting the second flange-like rim there against when the cavity holds the second exchangeable capsule.

A system for preparing a quantity of beverage, including first and second capsules, and an apparatus including a first and a second brew chamber part, wherein at least a portion of the second brew chamber part is movable into a first and a second brewing position, wherein the first brew chamber part is movable between a loading position and a brewing position, wherein the first brew chamber part in the brewing position together with the at least one portion of the second brew chamber part in the first brewing position and in the second position define respective closed positions in which the first exchangeable capsule and the second capsule fit in the brew chamber, respectively. A coffee machine including a controller, a boiler for heating a flow of infusion water, a movable infusion unit having an open infusion chamber connected to a dispensing line for dispensing the coffee infusion and having an ejection piston slidably supported therein in the infusion chamber, a supply line for supplying said flow of infusion water to the infusion unit, a closing piston engageable for closure of the infusion chamber. The controller can subject the infusion unit, prior to execution of the infusion process, to a first course of translational movement for closure of the infusion chamber by the closing piston, and to subject the infusion chamber and/or the ejection piston, following execution of the infusion process, to a second course of translational movement, for compression of the load of spent coffee grounds against the closing piston and for drainage of the liquid contained therein.

A decoction device for an extraction apparatus, in particular for preparing espresso, comprises a decoction chamber (7) enclosed by a chamber wall (5) for receiving a quantity of powder therein. The decoction chamber is situated between a first chamber bottom (20) and a second chamber bottom (30). The first chamber bottom (20) is coupled to a linear actuator and is axially movable in the decoction chamber so as to compress the powder to a bed. A drive is provided to impose a relative rotation between one of the chamber bottoms and the chamber wall as the chamber bottoms (20,30) approach each other. The respective chamber bottom (30) is for this purpose rotatable within the chamber wall (5) and the drive is able and configured to impose a rotation thereon during an approach movement of the first chamber bottom (20). A slip coupling (60) is provided in the transmission.

A brew head assembly insertable within a brewing apparatus dimensioned to fit within a compartment in a galley of an aircraft may include an adjustable assembly and a brew cup. The adjustable assembly may include a brew head and a support member. The support member may define a first brew head cavity. The brew head may be at least partially inserted into the first brew head cavity. The adjustable assembly may be actuatable between an open position and at least one closed position. The brew cup may define a second brew head cavity. The brew head may be at least partially inserted into the second brew head cavity. A height between the brew head and the brew cup when the adjustable assembly is in the at least one closed position may be responsive to one or more parameters of a brew pod of a plurality of brew pods.

System for preparing a potable beverage. The system may include a first capsule and an alternative second capsule, a first beverage preparation device and a second beverage preparation device, each arranged for receiving either the first capsule or the alternative second capsule. The first capsule and the alternative second capsule each include a sealing member at the outwardly extending flange for providing a fluid sealing contact with the first enclosing member if the capsule is used in the first beverage preparation device. There is no sealing interface between the first capsule and the second enclosing member for providing a fluid sealing during use, and there is a sealing interface between the alternative second capsule and the second enclosing member for providing a fluid sealing contact during use.

A coffee brewing process comprising the steps of: providing a coffee brewing device, having a plurality of coffee brewing elements; providing end user criteria; selecting recipes from a remote server based upon the end user criteria, said recipes including at least one data set corresponding to said recipe; downloading the recipe and corresponding at least one data set; adjusting settings of at least one coffee brewing element based upon the data set, and so; brewing coffee using said coffee brewing device at one element.
