Electrical actuation moves the infusion cylinder between a lower travel limit stop, where the ground coffee dose is loaded, and an upper travel limit stop where the infusion process occurs, an adjuster for positioning the upper travel limit stop based on the size of the loaded ground coffee dose, so that in the position of the upper travel limit stop, the infusion chamber has a volume sufficient to contain the ground coffee dose without compressing it.

The holder lid includes a recessed portion that extends into the holder body interior when the holder lid engages the holder body, and a passage in the recessed portion configured to allow fluid to flow into the holder body interior from the recessed portion.

A beverage preparation system comprises a first exchangeable capsule with a first exit face and a second exchangeable capsule with a second exit face, the second exit face having a larger diameter than the first exit face. The system further comprises an apparatus including an extraction plate having a plurality of relief elements for selectively engaging one of the first and second exit faces, and a fluid dispensing device for supplying an amount of fluid under pressure to a selected one of the exchangeable capsules, so as to press its exit face onto the relief elements, for opening the exit face. The extraction plate and the second exit face are adapted to each other such that a flow resistance of the second exit face when opened is less than a flow resistance of the first exit face when opened.

On the device side (7), an inlet (8) and an outlet (9) are arranged. The pod holder can be used to brew both espresso and coffee in the same machine depending upon the orientation of the pod holder.

BEVERAGE PRODUCTION MACHINES AND METHODS WITH MULTI CHAMBERED BASKET UNITS

Various beverage preparation machines having a multi-chambered basket unit are shown. The basket unit can be configured to accept multiple cartridge configurations. For example, some embodiments are configured to receive a first cartridge configuration in a first chamber of the basket unit and a second configuration in a second chamber of the basket unit. In various embodiments, the basket unit can rotate to allow selective accessibility of the first and second chambers. This can facilitate loading the cartridges into the appropriate chamber, such as loading the first cartridge configuration into the first chamber and the second cartridge configuration into the second chamber.
