A handheld filter press includes a pump, a water chamber, and a portafilter basket. The pump includes a pump housing that defines a pump chamber configured to pressurize air, and defines a pump outlet for exhausting pressurized air. The pump includes an outlet valve fluidly connected with the pump outlet. The outlet valve allows air to exit the pump chamber and prevents air from entering the pump chamber through the pump outlet. The water chamber is fluidly connected with the pump chamber through the outlet valve for receiving pressurized air from the pump chamber. The water chamber defines a water chamber outlet for exhausting pressurized air and water from the water chamber. The portafilter basket is fluidly connected with the water chamber for receiving pressurized water from the water chamber through the water chamber outlet. The portafilter basket is configured to store grounds, and to express a brewed beverage.

A method and system for vacuum extraction of brewed beverages is described. The process includes the steps of preparing a liquid water or solvent to a desired temperature, combining the liquid water or solvent with a first brewing material in a brewing vessel, removing air from the brewing vessel until a first desired pressure set point is reached, steeping the mixture of the liquid water or solvent and the first brewing material in the brewing vessel for a desired low-pressure steeping time, adding a filler gas to the brewing vessel until a second desired pressure set point is reached, steeping the mixture of the liquid water or solvent and the first brewing material in the brewing vessel for a desired steeping time at atmospheric or high-pressure and directing the liquid water or solvent and the first brewing material through a filtration system to yield a filtered brewed beverage. A system capable of performing these steps is also described.

A first water-level sensor is provided at the top of the first pot liner, and a second water-level sensor is provided at the top of the second pot liner. The controller controls the water-air pump to feed air to the first pot liner to direct the water to flow into the second pot liner. The controller controls the water-air pump to operate reversely, such that the water in the second pot liner is pumped back to the first pot liner.

Apparatus for providing a brewed beverage

An apparatus for providing an infused or brewed beverage comprises a brewing arrangement which is configured to brew a beverage according to a selected one of a plurality of brewing processes, at least one being a hot brewing processes and at least one being a cold brewing process. The apparatus includes a controller configured to receive a user selection indicative of a required beverage, and to control the brewing arrangement in dependence upon the user selection. The apparatus may for example be used to provide either hot brew or cold brew coffee as required, without the need for multiple machines.
