The toe region includes a second plurality of laser-generated features that provide a height-intersection coverage of the toe region, a width-intersection coverage of the toe region, and a surface-area coverage of the toe region. The heel region includes a third plurality of laser-generated features that provide a height-intersection coverage of the heel region, a width-intersection coverage of the heel region, and a surface-area coverage of the heel region.
Method for producing a sliding surface on a machine element
The invention relates to a method for producing a sliding surface on a machine element, in particular a cam follower, wherein the machine element is first provided with a coating on at least part of the surface of the machine element, into which coating a surface structure is then introduced by laser structuring. In order to be able to introduce a surface structure that does not penetrate the coating even in the case of low layer thicknesses (s1) of the coating, the introduction of the surface structure is performed by laser interference structuring.
METHOD OF MAKING A DECORATIVE ARTICLE, SUCH AS A JEWELLERY PIECE
A method of making a decorative article (1) such as a jewellery piece, the article comprising a body (2) having a decorative layer (5) and an element (3) set into the body. The method comprises: providing an element that is at least partially coated with a removable layer (4), setting the element into the body, coating the element and the body with the decorative layer, and removing the removable layer and the decorative layer from the element.
Durable, High Performance Wire Grid Polarizer
A method for making a wire grid polarizer (WGP) can provide WGPs with high temperature resistance, robust wires, oxidation resistance, and corrosion protection. In one embodiment, the method can comprise: (a) providing an array of wires on a bottom protection layer; (b) applying a top protection layer on the wires, spanning channels between wires; then (c) applying an upper barrier-layer on the top protection layer and into the channels through permeable junctions in the top protection layer. In a variation of this embodiment, the method can further comprise applying a lower barrier-layer before applying the top protection layer. In another variation, the bottom protection layer and the top protection layer can include aluminum oxide. In another embodiment, the method can comprise applying on the WGP an amino phosphonate then a hydrophobic chemical.
Method for Long-Term Storage of Information and Storage Medium Therefor
The present invention relates to an information storage medium and a method for long-term storage of information comprising the steps of: providing a ceramic substrate; coating the ceramic substrate with a layer of a second material different from the material of the ceramic substrate, the layer having a thickness no greater than 10 μm; tempering the coated ceramic substrate to form a writable plate or disc; encoding information on the writable plate or disc by using a laser and/or a focused particle beam to manipulate localized areas of the writable plate or disc.
Textured self-cleaning film system and method of forming same
A self-cleaning film system includes a substrate and an anti-reflection film disposed on the substrate. The anti-reflection film includes a first sheet formed from titanium dioxide, a second sheet formed from silicon dioxide and disposed on the first sheet, and a third sheet formed from titanium dioxide and disposed on the second sheet. The system includes a self-cleaning film disposed on the anti-reflection film and including a monolayer disposed on the third sheet and formed from a fluorinated material selected from the group consisting of fluorinated organic compounds, fluorinated inorganic compounds, and combinations thereof. The self-cleaning film includes a first plurality of regions disposed within the monolayer such that each of the first plurality of regions abuts and is surrounded by the fluorinated material and includes a photocatalytic material.
Moth-eye transfer mold, method of manufacturing moth-eye transfer mold, and method of transferring moth-eye structure
To provide a moth-eye transfer mold and a method of manufacturing a moth-eye transfer mold that provide a simple and inexpensive manufacturing process. A moth-eye transfer mold 1 is characterized by including a base 10, an underlayer 20 formed on the base 10, and a glassy carbon layer 30 formed on the underlayer 20, the glassy carbon layer 30 has an inverted moth-eye structure RM over a surface 30a, and the inverted moth-eye structure RM is randomly arranged cone-shaped pores.
Multicolor fixture finishes
A method of applying a multi-color finish to a plumbing fixture includes depositing a first coating on the plumbing fixture; selectively applying a masking material in a graduated fashion over at least a portion of the first coating to define a gradient from a first portion of the plumbing fixture that is substantially completely covered by the masking material to a second portion of the plumbing fixture that has substantially no masking material; depositing a second coating over the masking material; and removing the masking material from the plumbing fixture such that the plumbing fixture has a surface finish including a transition region representing a gradual transition between the first coating and the second coating.
PHOTONIC INTEGRATED CIRCUIT WITH SPUTTERED SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIAL
A sputtering system may inject hydrogen and a sputtering gas into a chamber of the sputtering system, which may cause at least one layer of a hydrogenated semiconductor material, such as hydrogenated silicon (Si:H), to be sputtered onto a substrate disposed in the chamber until the at least one layer has a thickness that satisfies a threshold. In some implementations, the hydrogen and the sputtering gas may be injected into the chamber of the sputtering system while a temperature in the chamber is in a range from 145 degrees Celsius to 165 degrees Celsius. Accordingly, in some implementations, the sputtered layer of the hydrogenated semiconductor material may have one or more optical properties that satisfy a threshold to enable operation in a 9xx nanometer wavelength regime and at larger wavelengths.
