The present invention relates to an acidic aqueous composition for coating metallic surfaces, particularly of aluminium materials, that comprises, besides water and optionally further components, a) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of organoalkoxysilanes, organosilanols, polyorganosilanols, organosiloxanes and polyorganosiloxanes, b) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium and aluminium compounds and silicon complex fluoride, and c) at least one copolymer which is stable at least in a segment of the pH range below 6 and which comprises, in alternating configuration, monomer units containing at least one carboxylic and/or phosphonic acid group and monomer units containing no acid group. The invention further relates to a corresponding coating method and to the use of the substrates coated by this method.

The method includes treating the metal surface with a primer composition comprising a secondary or tertiary amino-functional compound having at least two independently selected silane groups to provide a primed metal surface and subsequently treating the primed metal surface with a treatment composition comprising a fluorinated compound represented by formula Rf{X[Si(Y).sub.3x(R).sub.x].sub.y}.sub.z. An article treated by such a method is also disclosed. The coating film-forming composition includes an aromatic compound having an amino group and an aromatic ring in one molecule, and thio compound (sulfur oxoacids having a pKa of 1.9 or less and salts thereof are excluded). pH of the coating film-forming composition is 4 to 10. The thio compound is preferably one that ionized to form anions in a solution, and thiosulfate and thiocyanate are especially preferable. By bringing the coating film-forming composition into contact with the surface of a metal member, a coating film is formed on the surface of the metal member, so that a surface-treated metal member can be obtained.

The coating film-forming composition includes an aromatic compound having an amino group and an aromatic ring in one molecule, and thio compound (sulfur oxoacids having a pKa of 1.9 or less and salts thereof are excluded). pH of the coating film-forming composition is 4 to 10. The thio compound is preferably one that ionized to form anions in a solution, and thiosulfate and thiocyanate are especially preferable. A grain-oriented electrical steel sheet according to an aspect of the present invention includes: a steel sheet 1; an intermediate layer 4 containing Si and O, arranged on the steel sheet; and an insulation coating 3 arranged on the intermediate layer 4, in which the intermediate layer 4 contains a metal phosphide 5, a thickness of the intermediate layer 4 is 4 nm or more, and an abundance of the metal phosphide 5 present is 1% to 30% by cross-sectional area fraction in a cross section of the intermediate layer 4.
