PLATED METALLIC SUBSTRATES AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF

Plated metallic substrates and methods of manufacture are provided. The method comprises depositing a first layer onto at least a portion of the metallic substrate to create a coated substrate utilizing physical vapor deposition. The method comprises electroplating a second layer comprising chromium, a chromium alloy, or a combination thereof onto at least a portion of the first layer to create a plated substrate.

In a cross-section of the Zn—Al—Mg alloy layer an area fraction of MgZn.sub.2 phase is from 45 to 75%, a total area fraction of MgZn.sub.2 and Al phases is not less than 70%, and an area fraction of Zn—Al—MgZn.sub.2 ternary eutectic structure is from 0 to 5%; and the plating layer has a predetermined chemical composition.

The present invention provides a nickel-plated heat-treated steel sheet for a battery can (1), having a nickel layer with a nickel amount of 4.4 to 26.7 g/m.sup.2 on a steel sheet (11), wherein when the Fe intensity and the Ni intensity are continuously measured along the depth direction from the surface of the nickel-plated heat-treated steel sheet for a battery can, by using a high frequency glow discharge optical emission spectrometric analyzer, the difference (D2-D1) between the depth (D1) at which the Fe intensity exhibits a first predetermined value and the depth (D2) at which the Ni intensity exhibits a second predetermined value is less than 0.04 μm.

An aluminum-based plated steel sheet according to an aspect of the present invention includes: a base material; an aluminum-based plating layer located above the base material; and an intermetallic compound layer that is located between the base material and the aluminum-based plating layer and contains an intermetallic compound of Al and Fe, in which the base material has a chemical component within a predetermined range, the aluminum-based plating layer contains, on average, 80 mass % or more and 97 mass % or less of Al, 3 mass % or more and 15 mass % or less of Si, 0 mass % or more and 5 mass % or less of Zn, 0 mass % or more and 5 mass % or less of Fe, 0 mass % or more and 3 mass % or less in total of one or more selected from the group consisting of Mg and Ca, and impurities so that a total amount thereof is 100 mass %, an average value of a thickness of the intermetallic compound layer is 2 μm or more and 10 μm or less, a maximum value of the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer is 10 μm or more and 25 μm or less, and a standard deviation of the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer is 2 μm or more and 10 μm or less.
