POLYMERIC NANOCOMPOSITE BASED SENSOR AND COATING SYSTEMS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

A system and method for direct and/or active detection and monitoring of civil engineering or other infrastructural structures, and in a preferred embodiment, for hydrocarbon leakage in oil and gas pipelines, storage structures, and/or transportation structures. Particularly, the system and method relate to various nanocomposite sensor coating and data gathering systems. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a single measurement sensor coating (thin film) sensor. Other embodiments relate to multiple measurement sensor coating systems. The sensor is comprised of either a discrete conductive filament layer, or a single or multiple mesh of interwoven filaments of conductive material in one direction and nonconductive material in a perpendicular direction, as a substrate coated with sensitive coating materials to form a sensor grid. Various embodiments of the sensor coating and their applications are also disclosed.

An anode assembly is disclosed for use in a cathodic protection system. The anode assembly includes an elongated housing, an electrical cable, an anode, and electrically conductive backfill. The housing has a leading end and a trailing end through which the electrical cable extends. The anode is located within the housing and is in the form of a plurality of electrically conductive segments which are spaced apart from each other and which are electrically connected to the electrical cable at respective electrically conductive joints. The backfill surrounds the anode and cable within the housing.

The pinhole patch extends at least partially into and at least partially fills the pinhole. An outer surface of the pinhole patch is disposed adjacent and is mechanically joined to a pinhole surface that defines the pinhole. The solder is disposed over at least a portion of the outer surface of the pinhole patch that bonds the pinhole patch at least to the pinhole surface that defines the pinhole. A subassembly is also disclosed. The subassembly includes a pinhole patch and flux.

An improved marine anode sled comprises a single piece casting with high surface to weight ratio providing increased active surfaces and improved reliability. In one embodiment the anode weighs about 2,000 lbs and has an active surface area of about 5,000 square inches and a current output capacity of up to 160 amps. The improved anode has considerably higher current output than existing anode sleds with similar weight. Unlike known anode sleds, the entire exposed surface of new anode sled is anode material and passes current to a surrounding medium. The single piece casting eliminates structural failure when a frame of know anode sleds is damaged, and electrical failure when cables connecting multiple anodes are damaged. Two redundant lead cable are attached proximal to opposite corners to optimize reliability and electrical performance.
