LIQUID-ORGANIC HYDROGEN CARRIER SYSTEMS BASED ON CATALYTIC PEPTIDE FORMATION AND HYDROGENATION

The present invention provides a system and method of storing hydrogen (H.sub.2) and releasing it on demand, comprising and making use of diaminoalkanes and alcohols, or aminoalcohols as liquid-organic hydrogen carrier systems (LOHC). 2-amino-ethanol (AE) or its N-methyl derivative 2-(methylamino)ethanol undergo catalytic dehydrogenation to form a cyclic dipeptide (glycine anhydride—GA) or its N,N-dimethyl derivative (N,N-dimethyl GA) with release of hydrogen. Similarly, ethylenediamine (ED) and ethanol undergo catalytic dehydrogenation to form N,N′-diacetylethylenediamine (DAE) with release of hydrogen. Glycine anhydride (GA) or N,N-dimethyl-GA may be hydrogenated back to 2-aminoethanol (AE) or 2-(methylamino)ethanol, respectively, each of which functions as a hydrogen storage system. N,N′-diacetylethylenediamine (DAE) may be hydrogenated back to ED and ethanol, which functions as a hydrogen storage system. These reactions may be catalyzed by a variety of compounds or complexes, including Ruthenium complexes as described herein.

Synthesis and hydrogen storage properties of novel metal hydrides

A method for detecting a degree of hydrogenation of a liquid comprises one or more liquid hydrogen carriers, which can be hydrogenated, comprising: detecting a material property of the liquid and determining the degree of hydrogenation of the liquid on the basis of the detected material property of the liquid.

Solvent-supported compaction of metal-organic frameworks

Methods of forming a high surface area compacted MOF powder are disclosed, as well as MOF pellets formed thereby. The method may include synthesizing a metal organic framework (MOF) powder using a first solvent, exchanging the first solvent with a second solvent such that pores of the MOF powder are at least 10% filled with the second solvent, compacting the MOF powder having pores at least 10% filled with the second solvent into a pellet, and desolvating the compacted pellet to remove the second solvent. The pellet may maintain a specific surface area after compacting that is at least 80% its initial specific surface area. Compacting the MOF powder with a solvent at least partially filling its pores may prevent or reduce crushing of the MOF pore structure and maintain surface area, for example, for hydrogen or natural gas storage.
