This invention concerns an installation and method for treating a first stream (S1) of a colloidal suspension of water and ultra-fine particles and a second stream (S2) of heavy oil, both of which streams are derived from treating a flow of heavy crude oil or bitumen, to convert them into separate streams of clean water, clean oil, decanted solids and usable gases. The first stream (S1) is treated in a series of electro-kinetic reactors (20) operating by electrolysis/electro flocculation and water tank clarifiers (30) connected in parallel. The second stream (S2) is treated in ultrasound cyclone chambers (40). Released gas is collected from the tops of the electro-kinetic reactors (20) and the ultrasound cyclone chambers (40). Decanted solids are collected from the bottoms of the electro-kinetic reactors (20) and the ultrasound cyclone chambers (40). Clean water is collected from the water tank clarifiers (30). Clean oil is collected from the ultrasound cyclone chambers (40).

There is provided a fluid treatment separator and a method of treating fluid such as tailings from tailings ponds resulting from oil sands production. A fluid treatment separator may be used for treatment of a mixture containing at least oil and water. The separator includes a mixing chamber, an inlet and at least one outlet. The mixing chamber defines a flow path between the inlet and the at least one outlet. The inlet includes a nozzle arranged to introduce turbulence to the mixture along the flow path. At least one magnet is arranged to apply a magnetic field to the mixture along the flow path.

The essential parts of the system are a chamber with inlet and outlet for flowing incoming and outgoing air into a water-containing tank; at least one UV radiation lamp; optionally a UV radiation reflection cover on inner wall of the chamber; at least one double magnetic ring pair; and a skeleton for occupying center volume of the chamber around central longitudinal axis of the chamber. The skeleton comprises inner space for accommodating the lamp and holding elements for holding the double magnetic ring pair(s) around the lamp. The UV radiation reflection cover is configured to amplify interaction of UV radiation with oxygen molecules in the incoming air. The double magnetic ring pair(s) is configured to intensify the local magnetic fields and increase the number and mean lifetime of radicalized oxygen molecules and improve water purification.
